NikeMikerules crossing the line in his new TVR to start his title defence in style
New cars, new venue and new hopes and dreams, plus an impressive 23 cars welcomed us in to a new Season of the Thunder Enduro. The off season rule changes had seen a higher PI and with it new faster cars and some were amazingly turned out, even though the paint was still wet on many. Some didn’t even make the grid, as the Team Hard Mercedes and the second TVR of the newly announced in the paddock partnership between RML and Hoonigan Racing, left only one car available and built for the Champion. We await WeBilly in the second next week. Biggest surprise was the appearance of the Sauber truck and CarCrazyCal, with both a Ferrari 288 and Caddy ATV in the back, the later car
the one he was planning to race after back to back tests between them.

The Support series started the day off, and the 80s Hot Hatch Heaven entertained the crowd, even if the different configurations of some cars bemused the pitlane. Bradderstig was happy to start the season with a win, beating CelticFox and CQR Rob in filling out the podium; it was a great start in 4th overall for NorlinRacer who overturned the formbook in winning the new ProAM class. The Thunder Enduro cars lined up and the front row was the new Kia of Penfold and the Lotus Espirit of Mad. Penfold made a demon start to lead into Paddock Hill Bend, using the AWD to full effect, Mad slotting in behind in second and leading the sister car of RobracerUK, whilst Devil Lord was having a difficult start on the grass in the new Audi TT. Mad only took as far as Surtees to take the lead, and he was quickly followed through by his team mate and Nikemikerules in the new TVR. Mike took a few more corners to dislodge his old team mate and set off after Mad who led the cars across the line at the end of the first lap. Sadly it was only 22 cars, as poor Cal found the Caddy in a box of neutrals and stuck on the grid, at first it looked like a restart, but much to Mad’s relief, the black car was pushed away and the race continued. Mad led the cars across the line at the end of lap 2, but the TVR was now large in his mirrors and through to the lead on the run up to Druids. Mikes biggest rival was Braddersig in the Ferrari, Bradders was now up to 4th but a lower random grid slot and a careful first lap gave Mike the chance to make his escape. Bradders was up to second by lap 4, but Mike now had a 7 second lead, and over the next few laps that gap grew instead of coming down, the Ferrari was being outpaced around the Brands Hatch circuit, the new TVR easily the faster of the two. These two were setting off in to the sunset, but behind them things were far livelier. Mad was dropping back, but driving sensibly and picking his fights, his team mate passed him on lap 4, and CQR Rob was the next, followed by RangersRick in the new KRR Nissan 370z, the first of the AWD cars. Further back it was all going so terribly wrong for his teammate. BMR Sutton had started well and ran in the top 6 over the first lap in the other Datsun Sunny, but then he got it all wrong on the run to Surtees on lap 2 and again on the start straight on lap 3, needing an early unscheduled stop for repairs and new tyres. The first off was made worse by Devil lord having the same issues and following him off the circuit, the two making unavoidable contact, although the Audi was unscathed. The second Cerberus Audi wasn’t having the luck either, as Kinkycowboys was finding the car difficult and needing some sorting and development, and his race just got worse and worse, before finally retiring on lap 16. He would have been buoyed with a promising best lap in the low 1.31s though.
Bradders was the first of the leaders on lap 16 to stop, his attempts of an undercut, whilst teammate CQR Rob followed him a lap later, running third. Behind them and a lively dice was in full flow, as Robraceruk, CelticFox in the impressive Aston Martin, RangersRick all were squabbling over 4th. Behind them and NitroRushmini had done well to get the Corvette up through the field after being last on lap 1, was leading the equally impressive Kenty in the new Kia, Mad in the Lotus, and the squabbling ABigPie and Major Raver in the very different Alfa’s. Rob was the first to pit, followed by Rick, and these two decided to meet up with the pitwall within the pitlane, much to the amusement of those in the grandstand opposite.

Bradderstig chased hard to finish second on his debut with DARE.
Still out front, Mike carried on before pitting finally on lap 24 and rejoining 15 seconds to the good in the lead from Bradders. Third though was now ABigPieKey, the little Alfa 33 that hadn’t stopped and what was becoming obvious to all was that maybe he didn’t need to either, that the Italian car was good on fuel and soft on its Pirelli tyres. CQR Rob was determined to put both DARE Ferrari’s on the podium and catch the Alfa, but coming through Clearways on lap 25 the Ferrari cried enough and rolled to a halt, the driver distort to suffer a similar failure to the one he had at round 1 of last season. RangersRick was now leading the charge and was closing on the CK Motorsport Alfa, but although quicker he was living on the hope of the tyres hitting a cliff like they did for PieKey at Suzuka. He was catching at nearly 2 seconds a lap, the new Nissan was certainly impressive on a circuit not friendly to AWD, but he run out of laps and PieKey didn’t run out of tyres, in fact the delighted podium finisher was beaming of how his race long tyres were in better shape than those that had stopped to change mid race. It was a very impressive performance from them both.
Out front and Mike was more dominant than anything seen in last season’s Championship and continued to extend his lead, crossing the line to comfortable victory. He was overjoyed with the TVR and even felt he could have been quicker with more testing. He wasn’t counting his chickens though on the podium, knowing that although the TVR is a fantastic piece of kit, some of the other cars would be better suited to tracks coming later and of course the dreaded Pi changes. Bradderstig was happy with his second, it wasn’t going to be the best circuit for the Ferrari, but the car had run well and allowed him to put good points on the board. So the battle for 5th. Rick had the pace to leave this behind, but Nitro and Celtic were hard at it. They had the first of the two RML Lotus’s for company for half the race, but they soon found they had the legs on the British car, and the battle was left between the two, Celtic a bit faster on the straight bits, Nitro looking more poised through the corners. They swapped positions on two occasions, but the JDR run car came out on top, an impressive drive by the newcomer. For CelticFox and quicksilver, they were very happy, the Aston more likely to favour the power circuits over the likes of Brands Hatch. Robraceruk settled for 7th and added to his teammate finishing 9th, it was a fantastic day for the RML Juniors, and left them leading the teams championship as they headed home. Sandwiching them was the Kia Stinger of Kenty, who in turn took second in Class A. DMR were delighted with the performance, Kenty no fan of the Kent circuit and the delight for the team was heightened by the performance of Penfold in the sister car, who scored points with 15th and also finished runners up in the AM class. Winner of that class in 12th was Wambogini. The new DART Alfa seemed to struggle at Brands Hatch and both Wambogini and team mate Major Raver were very happy with the 12th and 10th place finishes on a circuit they knew would be an issue to the Alfa. Between them was reigning Class A champion Devil Lord. Cerberus had switched late to the Audi, and it looks a good car, although not as consistent as the old Escort as of yet. Devil had an up and down race and was just glad to get points on the board in the defence of his class championship. Behind these the battle went on for the 13th between Captain Storer and the new Nissan GTR and the recovering BMR Sutton in the Datsun. Sutton managed to win this 3 laps from home, and showed some promising pace in the chase, whilst for Alert-It it was a promising debut and good points with a car that looked to suffer from rear oversteer and may be better suited to some faster tracks ahead.

ABigPieKey outsmarted all to finish third without needing a pit stop.
16th and final finisher on the road was Hoppers in the new Porsche, who got faster as the race went on and he was overjoyed with the 3rd place finish in the AM group. The two other AM racers were not so happy, as Devilsbogeyman retired on lap 7, the Mercedes never looking as competitive as it had at the end of last season, even though it was beautifully turned out in its new livery, whilst the second version driven by Badbeat showed promised but in need of development, a crash 12 laps from home leaving the car stuck on the Copper straight. He wasn’t the only car to be stuck there, as NorlinRacer went barrel rolling into the tyres and also into retirement, the new family run BMW showed a bit of potential and will be
quick with a bit of testing. And finally, was the sole Hoppers Sport Academy Subaru BRZ of AtomStew. The Subaru was converted late into RWD from AWD and looked a massive handful, although Stew was buoyed of times in the 32s, which shows the car has promise.
So the Champion was overjoyed with his 4th Thunder Enduro win, he made it look easy but he knows when others get their cars up to speed it is going to get a whole lot harder. Roll on Hockeneheim next week, and it will be a shame we won’t get to see the Caddy race there either, we will all miss you Cal, and best of luck at Uni.
