Nikemike won the race and put one hand on the Season 2 Thunder Enduro Trophy

NikeMikeRules knew when he arrived in Australia that the Championship could be settled around the great Mount Panorama Circuit.  The RML TVR Sagaris has been a superb car this season and the team and driver have maximised it to the full.  WeeBilly was making a rare back to back visit to the series, the Classic WTCC leader was hoping to aid his teammate in the drivers’ Championship, but hopefully kill off any hopes of the others in the team series.  Bathurst is a hard circuit and a real car breaker, and some drivers decided to give it a miss.  DART, RML Development and KRR, were all down to one car only, whilst last week’s winning team of Hoppers Sport Academy were full of hope, with AtomStew

confident of anther good race and joined by the first lady driver in the series, ScarletWitch.  Scarlet had been testing the second Subaru BRZ, and was hopeful of having a good run within the AM class.

The day was started with the first glimpse of the Thunder Touring Car Championship, a mix of cars including BMW’s, Peugeots, Fiat’s, Honda’s, Fords and a Fiat Punto arrived on the grid.  Devil Lord went well early on, leading a train of BMW M1’s, in fact the first four at the flag were all from Stuttgart, with Posh Rob coming out tops over the top two in the support series standings Bradderstig and NikeMikerules.  NitroRushmini in a Mini, CelticFox in a Fiat and RangersRick in a Peugeot, all set lap times not far of the BMW hordes out front.

The grid rolled up for the main event and poleman AtomStew was beaten off the line, by fellow front row starter Devil Lord, the Cerberus Audi leading in to turn one.  Stew managed to fight off Major Raver, the two side by side through the first turn, with Robraceruk slotting into 4th place on the run up to the mountain.  The RML Lotus though got it all wrong at the first right hander up the hill, hitting the wall and starting a terrible day off for him and the team.  Out front and Devil Lord was making his escape, Stew was quickly shaking off the attentions of Major Raver, whose Alfa looked big and heavy over the mountain top, as he was now under a lot of pressure from Basslinejunkio, up to 4th in the Escort Cosworth.  Devil Lord completed lap 1 in first, Stew second, Raver holding on to third ahead of Basslinejunkio, who had the first of the TVR’s looming large behind him, as WeeBilly was 5th, Kinkycowboys in 6th, and the top 10 filled by CelticFox, NikeMike, Bradders,  and Penfold.  In early troubles and needing stops were Posh Rob and also Kenty, not surprising as many felt the Kia Stinger would be a problematic car around Bathurst.

Bassline was giving Raver plenty of pressure on lap 2, and he made a brave move for third at the chicane on the mountain, this slowed Billy behind slightly and allowed Mike to lead the attack on the Alfa.  Coming down the Conrod straight and Bass made a mistake, this allowed Raver back through and as they headed to the final corner all 4 cars were nose to tail.  Raver got a real drift on coming on to the pit straight; this allowed Mike to pass the Alfa and the Ford to go up to third, Bass then following him through one corner later.  Keen for these two not to escape, WeeBilly was now on the Alfa’s tail, and at the first right hander going up the hill, caught the back of the Alfa and spun it into the wall.  Raver now had to sit and wait for clear track, before spinning the car around and rejoining down in 14th place.

Out front and Devil lord was slowly extending his lead over Stew, but on lap 5 the Audi got it wrong at the chicane at the end of the Conrod Straight, an early stop was needed and the lead was lost.  It was the second stop that Cerberus had had to do, as team mate Kinkycowboys had already been in and was fuming that his error had compromised his strategy and his race.  Devil Lord rejoined in 8th place eager to make up for lost time, the field was becoming pretty spread out as drivers stopped and some were taking it easy.  Basslinejunkio was in 4th and leading AM, but others from the class were running well.  Devilsbogeyman and Badbeat were once again terrifying all including themselves

Badbeat drove brilliantly to finish 8th overall and win AM

with the lighting speed both Mercedes had down the straights and both these two were now in to the top 10.  Also going well with them was Penfold, who was backing up his promising display from Road Atlanta with another good drive in the unfaniced Kia.  His teammate Kenty had lost time early on, but now was flying along and making up places and heading back in to the top 10 himself.  Stew’s lead out front lasted 2 laps before he was the next to make an error this now left Mike in first place, but he was the only TVR to come around.  Billy had been following a few seconds behind, but a couple of offs had seen him lose a few seconds, and the power died and the car rolled to a stop.  He was far from happy with a very rare mechanical issue to the team and the crowd left disappointed to lose the potential battle between the TVR twins.

Mike now led by 6 seconds, Stew trying hard to close that back down, and these two well clear of new third place driver NitroRushmini.  Nitro is proving to be one of the most consistent and mistake free drivers in the series, and once again, as walls were clipped and time lost by others, the Corvette driver was running fantastically and now ahead of RangersRick and Bradderstig for the final podium spots.  Catching these guys though was the recovering Devil Lord, who was flying along, and not far behind him, were the other two recovering cars of Kenty and Posh Rob.  Mike continued to maintain his lead, his laps consistently in and around the 2.12s, whilst Stew lapped slightly faster some laps but in the 13s and 14s on others.  Lap 12 saw Stew make his stop, and over the next few laps so did a number of other runners, which left Mike out front and now being chased by the Audi TT of Devil Lord.  The RML technical guys were on the pit wall trying to work out if they could do the race without stopping and on lap 20 decided no and the leader came in taking no chances.  He rejoined twenty seconds in front and clear barring mistakes from the rest.  Devil Lord set a new lap record trying to chase him down, but could only do so by 5 seconds as the chequered flag fell.  Mike was overjoyed at the victory, and the result moved him with touching distance of a second title.  “I didn’t expect to win, but I just found some consistency and in fact it was like being in autopilot.  The car felt so good and handled superbly, I got a good balance on the aero as well”.  For Devil Lord his first podium was small consolation, the Cerberus driver felt this was the second time in a week where he could of tasted victory and was disappointed with himself.  The final podium finisher was also disappointed.  Atomstew also felt he could have repeated the feats of 7 days ago, and that a couple of errors had cost him dear unlike at Road Atlanta.  He was happy though with another podium and vowing to be a championship contender next season, not that his signature is currently on a contract for Season 3.

Nitrorush continued to be best of the rest, withstanding the attack from Bradders, and in the last few laps the flying Kia.  Kenty didn’t have enough to pass the Corvette, but it was a mightily impressive performance from both drivers.  6th went to Bradderstig who felt the Ferrari to be fat and wide around Bathurst, and he was happy with the team points, especially as the second DARE Ferrari came home 9th, a difficult end for Posh Rob, after a great start to the day.  Posh Rob beating the CK Motorsport Alfa 33 of ABigPieKey late on.  It started off being a great season for the team, but again they struggled for pace as development of the car comes to an end.  7th was the sole KRR Nissan of RangersRick, who was overjoyed to keep his lead in the Class Championship and to escape Bathurst, whilst in 8th we had wide celebrations for the AM winners.  No it wasn’t Basslinejunkio, but instead it was the SMEG Racing Mercedes of Badbeat.  The little Mercedes stayed out of trouble, but it was fast as well, setting the fastest lap in class, and Badbeat kept out of trouble on the mountain and flew down the straights.  He was overjoyed and so were the team, even more so after the race when it was announced they had signed to join the K-Class Vapes team in the Escorts next season.  His teammate for next season, Basslinejunkio, was going backwards as the race wore on, a slight hit with the wall had affected the radiator and the cooling and he was running at a slower pace to stop the engine expiring.

This left him under a late attack from another impressive AM runner, Penfold.  Penfold had been dreading the race here, like his team mate Kenty, they felt the evil handling Kia would struggle, but it didn’t and Penfold drove an inspired race, just missing out on second in the class and the top 10.  The other AM runners had difficult days.  Devilsbogeyman was massively unlucky.  He was challenging for the class lead when the wheel nut fell off from his pitstop and he had to do a whole lap on three wheels, which lost him 4 laps.  It was a real shame after a good drive by the Fife Flyer.  Hoppers may have seen happy days of late for his teams, but for him behind the wheel it has been difficult.

Such was Devil Lord's pace, he was disappointed with a career best second

He struggled with the Porsche and finished 2 laps down, although he was pleased with his own performance and hopeful for next week at Spa where the car should fly.  The last AM runner was ScarletWitch.  This was always going to be a hard place to do your first Thunder Enduro race, and Scarlet had a few early issues getting use to the car and then treated the race as a test session, retiring just after half distance, but happy with the time in the car.

For the others it was a terrible day.  Kinky’s extra pitstop left him down in 13th, he wasn’t happy, and he and the team were left wondering how Cerberus still can’t win a Thunder Enduro race.  14th and equally unhappy was Robraceruk.  Rob had lost two good results in recent weeks, and came here on a high, determined to make up for it, but he made a number of mistakes and he even admitted that he came close to retiring the Lotus midrace.  Rob though still managed to beat Major Raver, who never recovered from his earlier problems and lapped the slowest of all, a massive change from last week.  Lastly, was the first retirement for CelticFox.  The Aston Martin again proved to be fast on the straight but unreliable and he ground to a halt on lap 4.

So Mike is almost home and dry, Rick looks set for class honours and RML with Hoonigan hold on to the team lead.  Spa next week for the last mixed Pi race of the season.  Can anyone do anything to stop those TVR’s?
