The close margins between winning and losing, AtomStew on lap 1

The paddock conversation over the last few days has been at fever pitch, and as the trucks rolled into Road Atlanta, those talks and whispers only intensified.  Some of the conversation and chatter came from the week earlier at Sebring.  RML Development were a little bit sombre, a strong drive a week before had seen the car of Robraceruk close to the podium spots, but an error from the team had seen the car disqualified and the team on the back foot at Road Atlanta.  Robraceruk, “It’s been a hard week, I was really happy with how we went last week, but disappointed to miss out on the podium, then when the car failed scruitneering as well, so it was a real downer and felt like a double kick in the bo**ockss, especially as I

don’t believe the correct parts would of slowed us down too much.  We are hoping for a good race here, although it will difficult for me starting at the back with 765Pi”.

They weren’t the only team left disappointed from last week.  Hoppers Sport had taken its first victory and the rest of the season looked strong, only for team to lose one of its biggest sponsors for the rest of the season and unable to run the race winning car from last week.  J47TEE looks to be sidelined until season 3 sadly.  Only one of the Hoppers Sport Academy cars appeared, the Subaru BRZ for AtomStew.  The Thunder Enduro has been a real struggle for AtomStew and the team, the Subaru believed to have a lot of potential but was a beast the team were struggling to tame.  New signing for next season, RangersRick had bought his expertise from KRR with him early and although contractually unable to drive the car, had been busy at the Hoppers Sport Factory in Wolverhampton helping on set up.  DART were surprisingly at three cars.  The team had the pair of Alfa’s, which had been expected to be only one, but they had flown in Wambogini from business commitments in London just for the race, the lead driver had been hard at work on the 815Pi 8c in his absence and they were confident of a good result and also stopping Basslinejunkio’s charge to AM honours.  The third car was covered in sheets, make and model unknown, and was believed to be the team’s Season 3 car that would be testing privately after the race.  One eagle eyed hack though spotted a BMW badge.  We had a returning Team Hard Mercedes and also a second RML TVR for WeeBilly, whose progress from the back would keep all interested.  JDR Racing were missing, a nasty stomach bug had left their driver NitroRushmini unwell and unable to race under doctors orders, whilst K-Class Vapes showed up with a cool last minute sponsorship deal with Hotwheels.

The support race was for the Citroen 2CV’s and they entertained massively, as Kinkycowboys led early on, but was overtaken late on by Nikemike.  Also going well in that race was Devil Lord, and as the Thuder Enduro cars took to the grid, he and teammate Kinkycowboys were full of hope of a strong result as they start to iron out the kinks in the Audi TT’s armour.  One thing well in the Cerberus teams armour is the AWD and Kinky made a demon start to lead the cars into the first corner, the two KRR Nissan’s being muscled out in the opening few corners, with both Nikemike and Bradders latching on to the tail of the Audi.  Mike was on a mission, he lacked the grunt down the back straight but he got the chicane right at the end of the first lap, where as Kinky didn’t and the TVR dived down the inside on the run down to the last corner to take the lead.  Bradders was third in the Ferrari a second behind, ahead of Basslinejunkio having a great opening first lap, but he was under massive pressure.  Devil Lord had an inspired opening lap and was up to 5th and on the run down to the first corner of lap two, he made that 4th.  The top 10 on this opening lap, saw Devilsbogeyman up to 6th, the second Mercedes A45 should have been with him, but Badbeat had gone off at the last chicane and damaged the car, needing an early pitstop.  He wasn’t the only one to go off, as Atomstew got it completely wrong with his braking, and somehow managed to miss wiping out Major Raver, BMR Sutton and Wambogini, more amazing was because Wambogini had been put on to the grass by some robust defending by the Nissan, and this left Stew with the smallest patch of green stuff to aim for an miss hitting them all.  This meant BMR Sutton crossed the line in 7th, Raver 8th, Wambogini 9th and Mad in the first of the Lotus’s in 10th.  Right behind him was his teammate who had, had a brilliant first lap, and was bringing the TVR of WeeBilly with him.  Stew was left bringing up the rear.

Out front and Mike started to move away from the Audi, but Kinky had enough on Bradders, whose Ferrari was now full of the second Audi.  It had been a really trying season for the reigning Class A champion, but Devil Lord was flying and before the lap was out he was through to 3rd and now homing in on his teammate.  Kinky was fast but trying everything to keep up with the TVR of the Championship leader, an error on lap 3 saw him drop into the hands of Bradders, his team mate was through now to chase down the leader.  It took Devil Lord all of two laps to catch the TVR and on lap 6 he was into the lead of a Thunder Enduro race for the first time.  For the next 6 laps the Audi held the lead, but Mike was quick through every corner and was keeping him

Devil Lord was brilliant early on, taking the lead.

honest.  These top 5 were getting away, as 6th place Devilsbogeyman was proving to be a massive cork in the bottle for those behind.  Major Raver had spent a couple of laps trying to pass, the Mercedes was a complete rocketship down the straights, and Devils knew it, and was using it brilliantly.  Raver now had his mirrors full of Robracer and WeeBIlly, losing a place to the Lotus twice and twice the Alfa retook it, the pair having a great dice, knowing that they needed to get past the Mercedes to stop those ahead escaping.  On lap 7 Devilsbogeyman made a mistake at the first corner and the Alfa and Lotus were through, the TVR of WeeBIlly though wasn’t so lucky, Devilsbogeyman rejoining safely in front, but the twisty hill section was a big strength to the Alfa and Lotus and they had made enough of a gap, that by the time the back straight appeared they were clear of the Fife Flyer.  Raver was watching his mirrors, and as they came around the final bend they were full of a slowing Lotus, a transmission glitch had cut the power to the Lotus and it was slowing, after a few frantic hits of the reset button the V8 engine burst back into life and Robraceruk was away, but he had lost 3 places.

Out front and the wheels were about to fall off the great early laps for the Cerberus twins.  Lap 8 saw Kinky hit the wall hard, needing a stop, whilst Devil Lord sadly repeated it a few laps later meaning a stop for him as well.  This had put Mike out in front, but now Basslinejunkio was leading the chase as he had passed Bradderstig Ferrari and the Ferrari had Major Raver looming large and also the Subaru of Atomstew, who had been picking cars off coming through the field.  The Subaru was flying along, but it was also am little erratic, a few offs had lost him time even on his charge through the field.  Raver admitted after the race he let the Subaru past, because it was faster but he was hoping it would go off as well.  Stew soon relieved Bradders of third, as did Raver and these two now headed off after Basslinejunkio in second.  It was becoming obvious that all was not well in Bradders Ferrari, and on lap 18 he pulled over to retire, the engine dead on the 360.  The second car wasn’t having the best of days either as CQR Rob was stuck just outside the top 10, and struggling for pace.  Basslinejunkio let the flying Subaru through for second on lap 19, his fight wasn’t was the Hoppers Sport Academy car, but he was a lot more robust with the DART Alfa and this was allowing the recovering Lotus of Robraceruk to home in on the pair and he was bringing WeeBilly with him now that he was free of Devilsbogeyman.

Lap 20 and Robracer pitted in an attempt to grab the undercut, whilst two laps later Bassline was in as well.  This unleashed the Alfa which now lapped quicker than all bar his teammate further back and the leader and he started to close down the TVR of Nikemike.  Mike pitted on lap 24 for fresh rubber and rejoined third, but such was the amazing pace from the leader that when he stopped two laps later he rejoined still in the lead and a good 20second clear of the TVR.  Raver pitted on the same lap, the tyres on the Alfa rooted which saw an off on his in lap.  RML had hoped the earlier stop and fresh rubber would give Mike the chance to extend his lead over Raver, but also that clean air would give Robraceruk the undercut and help him get passed the DART car as well.  This didn’t work out though as Raver rejoined only 2 seconds behind the TVR, kicking himself that his in lap error, cost him the chance to pass Mike, whilst Rob was badly bottled up.  The pitstop for Bass and Rob had seen them rejoin behind the CK Motorsport Alfa 33 of ABigPieKey.  Piekey had been the talk of the paddock over the past week with stories that he is off to join RML, JDR Racing and KRR.  The Alfa was again hoping to do the race without stopping, it lacked a lot down the straights, but was a rocket ship through the first half of the lap, and this was allowing him to build up enough to then be able to defend down the long back straight.  On lap 25 the K-Class Vapes Escort got alongside but was edged on to the grass by Piekey this put him in to defence mode against the Lotus and saw the same treatment dished out by the Escort to the Lotus.  These guys were fighting hard and the next lap saw a near repeat on the run to the chicane but this time contact was made.  Piekey was again hard on his defence, which had Bass on the grass, now Rob looked to take advantage and took the pair around the outside, but the Escort made contact with the Lotus and it saw the yellow car spin.  In a rage Robraceruk lit the rear tyres up of the Lotus and rejoined, but the tyres were rooted and so were his podium hopes.  Bass wasn’t finished and a lap later got the job done on Piekey, but now he was a drift of those a head and Billy was away up the road.  It wasn’t over though as PieKey was keeping the Escort on its toes and looking to punish any mistake from the AM Class series leader.  Out-front and Stew had settled down nicely, lapping consistently and cleanly and extending his lead, but taking no risks, but behind him it was game on.  Raver had caught Mike and on lap 31 he got the run down the back straight, the two side by side through the chicane, Raver looked though to have maybe given the series leader to much room and respect and his lack of slamming the door, allowed the TVR back through on the run through the last corner, Raver having to back out losing him time.  3 laps later he had made that time up and was close enough heading on to the back straight for another go, only to find the KRR Nissan of BMR Sutton reversing onto the track as they entered the second right hander that leads on to the straight.  Lap 36 and he was back again, but this time a rejoining Porsche at the same spot lost him the time, leaving him one last go on lap 39.  Raver lined it up and got the TVR well before the braking area but left his braking ridiculously late and slid off, and Mike was safe and clear for a comfortable last lap.  Stew was well clear of this and polished off those last few laps for a brilliant first win for him, Hoppers Sport Academy and the Subaru.  The much maligned BRZ finally finding the pace many in the pitlane thought it may possess over the past two seasons.  Stew was beaming on the podium, and was quick to thank the team and those behind the scenes who had helped get the car to winning pace.  Mike was ecstatic with second place, he had done a great job to make the 730Pi TVR competitive here and this was possibly his best drive of the season.  With Bradders retirement he has the chance to clinch the title next week and the RML team are back in control of the team’s championship.  He was well backed up by WeeBilly, who felt he could have been up with his teammate had he not started at the back and had to fight his way through the pack.  He like Mike pleased that the team have a great chance to lift the Teams Championship now, which was WeeBilly’s aim at the start of the season.

Raver ended up splitting them in third, and annoyed with himself for the errors, although his teammate was doubly so.  Wambogini had a few offs which needed an earlier stop than he had hoped, but in clean air he flew and set the third fastest lap of the race in finishing 13th.  He felt that a proper test before the race, he may have challenged for a top 5 finish.  The 5th place for Basslinejunkio added to the frustration, Bass now has a clear lead in AM and looks set to lift the title, although the Escort driver was himself disappointed, as he felt a podium could have been on.  ABigPieKey was right behind him in 6th and was happy with a return to form and at a circuit that he wasn’t expecting to suit

Massive disspointment again for Robraceruk, whilst Major Raver came third in the Alfa

seemed to work out well for them.  7th was the first of the Lotus’s, but not the one that had been strong for the first two thirds of the race.  Mad had once again been slowed early on and once in to clean air flown but by then he was playing an impossible game of catch up.  He had a great dice in the latter laps with Kinky in the recovering Cerberus Audi, and 7th place was a good result and haul of points.  He will be hoping that a place in the top 10 of the grid and a clean first lap could have its rewards next week.  For his teammate the last few laps were difficult, tyres destroyed from his battle, he slumped to 10th place and looked totally dejected after a difficult 8 days, where he had only one 10th place to show for two possible podiums, after some of his most competitive driving in the series.  The Cerberus boys were the meat in a Lotus sandwich, but they two were left with what if questions as well.  Two errors by both had seriously spoilt their chances of podiums and Devil lord felt that he could have had enough to possibly hold off Stew.  It was a competitive showing by both, but again it proved the Audi TT is a difficult car to stay consistent in.

11th went to the sole remaining Ferrari, Posh Rob having a lonely race, as did 12th place CelticFox, the Aston fast on the straight, but in dire need of a diet as the weight hurt the car on acceleration.  Devilsbogeyman ended up 14th, he went steadily back after his early brave battles out front, and was unable to defend from the charging Wambogini for second in class.  The Fife Flyer is enjoying the end of the season and is hopeful of causing a shock at either Bathurst or Spa.  The second Mercedes A45 of Badbeat ended up 17th, he lost time early on with an extra stop to repair damages and spent the race trying to chase down the inspired Penfold.  DMR are having a truly horrible season, the Kia overweight and possessing the turning circle of the QE2.  Penfold though outdrove the car here at Road Atlanta, and also his teammate, using the grunt down the straights and literally man handling the car through the corners.  On the last lap the engine was spluttering away, and the car was out of fuel, it managed to use the downhill section at the end to freewheel across the line 6 seconds ahead of Badbeat, Penfold completely exhausted but with a big smile across his face.  For his teammate Kenty, he was seen looking for the lake just outside the circuit, to see if it was deep enough to dump the car in.  15th fell to another who can’t wait to see the back of his back of his current mount, RGreenwood.  Team Hard has struggled on development time for the Mercedes, and again it handled dreadfully and left RGreenwood who has won in THORS around this track, with no chance.  He was quick to deny rumours of a return to Alert-It, and was vowing to be back next season with Team Hard and to be challenging with the right car.  The only other finishers were the pair of KRR Nissan’s who had a horrible day.  Rick was shuffled back early on, the lack of power really hurting the AWD version, whilst his teammate started reasonably strongly but he to dropped like a stone through the order.  These two managed to do an Alert-It and make contact with each other near the end, and you got the feeling the reigning Champions are now no longer one.  Lastly was the winning team from last week, but team owner Hoppers was 11 laps down and classed as a non finisher.  The Porsche had been brilliant in J47TEE hands last week, but was not the same for team owner Hoppers this.  He was over the moon with another win for the stable, although not happy with his own performance on track.

So wow what a race and some real emotion from some of drivers afterwards as well.  Mike was buzzing with his championship lead and his second place, whilst AtomStew was utterly delighted to prove his pace in the Thunder Enduro “It’s been really difficult to get on top of the car, but the team worked hard and I had good support from RangersRick, I’m really hoping we get the chance to continue that momentum and optimism into next season and that I can stay with the team”, said the winner after the race.  After his performance at Road Atlanta, Atomstew name must be on a few teams lips as silly season for Season 3 fully ramps up.

Next week sees a mammoth test of concentration, as we head to Australia for the first time and the challenging Bathurst circuit.
