K-CLASS THUNDER ENDURO ROUND 7 SEBRING – 30th OCTOBER 2018
J47TEE’S HOPPY DAY FOR PORSCHE AT SEBRING
First wins for J47TEE, PORSCHE and Hoppers Sport ~ Dominant performance gives them a comfortable win ~ Great dice for second won by the impressive Kinkycowboys ~ Another Sebring disaster for NikeMikeRules ~ Badbeat and Devilsbogeyman dominate AM with impressive drives ~ Good day for KRR’s Nissan put them back in the teams picture ~ Robraceruk disqualified after a good race.

Last season we came to Sebring with NikeMikeRules having the most comfortable lead, it was a bad day and a retirement next time out left him under pressure in the Championship. After blitzing the field at Le Mans, RML were certainly not hoping for any form of repeat for the Championship leader, and were also down to one car as WeeBilly was missing. Hoppers Sport was looking in a very confident mood, they had two new freshly painted Porsche 911 GT2’s, and with J47TEE high up the grid, hopes of the team’s best ever result in any series. They were also the talk of the paddock with rumours of J47TEE and AWD star RangersRick signed up for season 3.
This was all anyone saw of the Hoppers Sport Porsche of J47TEE
The Hoppers Sport Academy team was also a lot more bullish, major work had been done on the Subaru BRZ and lead driver AtomStew was looking forward to not only making the grid but also being competitive. A Second car was entered for the series first lady driver, Scarletwitch, but the car wasn’t ready in time and the team decided to wait until Road Atlanta next week. We did have a completely new entry on the grid, as an Aston Martin Vantage was entered for new driver DaveyGallardo, who was running the car independently.
The grid had Mike and Bradders on the front row, but they were swamped by row 2 on the rundown to the first corner, by the fast starting J47TEE and the usual rocket ship off the line, RangersRick. Two others though were even quicker than that, as Kinkycowboys and Devilsbogeyman were both past Bradders Ferrari before they turned into the first corner, Kinky though came across the front of the TVR of Mike and amazingly the Audi went sideways but corrected itself before any harm was done, and this left Kinky in third. The same scenario was then played out at the 4th corner as Devilsbogeyman slid in front of the championship leader, held the slide when the contact was made and he was up to 4th. The front row pair had been completely mugged. Out front and J47TEE was having an awesome opening lap and the Porsche was mega down the long straights and dancing through the corners that it crossed the line two seconds to the good, Rick was second followed by Kinky who was under massive pressure from the Mercedes of Devilsbogeyman, 5th was Mike, 6th was BMR Sutton, Robraceruk was 7th, Bradders making a couple of small errors which was unlike him, was down to 8th, whilst Nitro and Basslinejunkio completed the top 10. Devilsbogeyman is the lap record holder around Sebring, and the circuit seems to suit the little Mercedes A45, as he was putting Kinky under pressure for third, although he now had BMR Sutton closing in behind. The second Mercedes may not have been as rapid off the line, but Badbeat was starting to pick cars off further back, and all of sudden we had a completely different picture going on in AM, with Basslinejunkio and Wambogini looking far from the fastest in class. Devilsbogeyman found himself up to third briefly on lap 3, as Kinky got the Audi completely wrong in the final bend and hit the wall, dropping him back. The Mercedes stay in the top 3 was brief, as although the car was quick on the straights its braking wasn’t the best, and he was mugged first by BMR Sutton, then the recovering Bradderstig and also by NitroRushMini and Robraceruk. These two were going at a decent pace, and have been impressive in recent rounds and here at Sebring it was no different. The Lotus had more Pi and was looking quicker than the JDR Racing Corvette but it was struggling to get past. On lap 7 it had a go under the bridges on the run down to turn 5, but the two made contact and the Lotus hit the wall. It was just inside the pit window for the RML Development car that with the bit of damage he had he decided to stop. Such was the pace of the field, this stop dropped him to 19th place, but he was about to be joined in the pits by his sister team car of the Championship Leader NikeMikeRules. Mike had been battling just outside the top 10 with a large group of cars, the TVR was as quick as nearly everyone through the middle part of the lap, but was slower on the two straights. Most in the pitlane had been left wondering if he was also being careful down to preserving fuel and not stopping, but that plan was about to go out of the window. Going on to the back straight the TVR got it all wrong hitting the inside tyre wall and spinning him into the path of the recovering Kinky. This two hit each other hard and a pit for repairs was needed, lap 7 was not good to the RML team’s hopes. As for Cerberus, the stop had dropped Kinky to 16th, and now we were about to witness one of the best comebacks in the history of the Thunder Enduro, but more of that in a bit. The second Audi was having another torrid day. The team had some engineering help from RML to try and dial out some of the handling woes with the little Audi TT, for Kinky this would turn out to work, but for Devil Lord it was another difficult day in the office. Devil Lord followed the feet of his team mate on lap 6 and hit the outside wall at the last bend, this dropped him further back, and from there he had a rather lonely race coming home in 12th place. He must be hoping that the RML tweaks make a difference to his car at Road Atlanta next week, a circuit he was very impressive at last season.
Out front J47TEE was rushing away, Rick was giving chase but he was now under pressure from the recovering Bradders and his own teammate, it was a repeat of the squabble at Long Beach all over again. Bradders was making uncharacteristic mistakes for him, maybe overdriving the Ferrari slightly to make up for the loss of power, but he was able to dislodge Rick for second on lap 9, although Kris was soon passed them both and up to second, the one driver who seems to enjoy his car with less power than more. Keeping a watching brief on all these in 5th was Nitro, who was still impressing all in the Corvette even if the car was having a lonely run on its own. Behind him and having a really promising run was AtomStew.

Bradderstig once again was battling hard with the KRR Nissan's for the podium
Hoppers Sport were confident of the improvements made to the Subaru, and it was showing, Stew taking a few laps to get through the squabble at the back end of the top 10 and in clean air was running well. The pitstops that were more scheduled started on lap 12, as Rick dived in, Bradders right behind him and Kris next. It was obvious due to the lead the Porsche had out front, that these guys were now fighting for the runners up spot behind J47TEE. The last to stop was Major Raver, who managed to get up to second whilst those ahead had ducked in for fresh boots and fuel. Raver had been doing the usual of starting slower and getting quicker as the race was going on, and when Kris rejoined behind him in third, such was Raver’s pace he pulled away from the KRR Nissan. He was finally the last to stop on lap 18 dropping him to 11th, a lap after the leader had made his splash and dash out front.
The pit stops now gave us a true reflection, J47TEE was clear out front, Kris was second ahead of Bradders, Rick and then two of the early stoppers who had been flying in the clean air, Robraceruk and Kinkycowboys. Kinky passed the Lotus on lap 19 and was now on a mission as he hunted down the three ahead, so fast was the Audi TT he was nearly matching the pace of the leader, and first he battled with and passed Rick, and two laps later he was passed the Ferrari of Bradders , Kinkycowboys was truly a man possessed in the red Cerberus car. On lap 22 he was on the tail of BMR Sutton and now eager to take second. With just over a lap left he darted for a gap and passed the KRR car and was up into second. He was over a minute behind the leader but he didn’t care as he crossed the line second, the shouting and shaking his fist out the window showing the delight he was feeling. Those late laps were more nail biting in the pitlane than in the cockpit. Hopperswwfc had retired the second car early in the race with the same electrical issues as Le Mans, so now he was on the pitwall as team boss hoping that the same gremlins wouldn’t hamper the leading car. J47TEE was comfortable though, all under control and he even managed to bang in a new lap record 4 laps from the end, such was his confidence. He crossed the line for his, the teams and Porsche’s first success in the Thunder Enduro, team manager Hoppers waving his 11 degrees cap in delight on the pitwall. After a number of years of never experiencing a podium as a driver or team owner, it was a special day for the team and one they will remember for many years to come.

BMR Sutton held on to third, he Bradders and Rick equally matched once again. For KRR it was a good result, the single car entries for DARE and RML had allowed the team to score valuable points in defence of their title. 6th place on track had gone to Robraceruk, Rob had shown great pace in his recovery drive, the tyres were long passed their best at the end and he felt if he had stopped later that he may of challenged for the podium spots. There was heartbreak at the end of his race, as the scrutinisers found his car failed the Pi regs and he was disqualified from the results. This promoted Nitrorushmini to 6th, another fantastic effort; although a lonely race for the Corvette it was more
Devilsbogeyman was in the fight for the top 10 and won the AM Class.
solid points in the championship, the team also looking good to be top independent at the end of the season. 7th fell to Major Raver who was very quick in the last two thirds of the race. The Alfa struggled badly in some of the slower corners, but was awesome through the last corner and first, also through the esses towards the end of the lap. Raver managed to grab the position from AtomStew two laps from the end, the Subaru falling off under pressure from Alfa and then needing a quick top up of fuel. This dropped him down to 14th but it was by far his best performance and it gives him and the team real confidence before Road Atlanta next week. So in 8th place was the winner of the AM class. Devilsbogeyman had spent the whole race in and around the top 10, but it wasn’t an easy win in class for him. Badbeat in the other Mercedes gradually picked off those ahead and 5 laps from home dived past Devils to take the class lead. Sadly a small error saw him drop to 10th place, but it was a brilliant performance from the pair, and the crowd loved seeing the two independent runners beat the bigger budget teams in the class on pace. These two could be brilliant again next week as well. Between them came Mad in the second Lotus, who is suffering from losing time in the early laps. He wasn’t far off the pace of those ahead and drove a faultless race and if he can get some luck in the early laps he will be one to watch. Behind these came Kenty in the Kia, the car really struggled here and Kenty and the DMR team were surprisingly well off the pace. For teammate Penfold it was another day when the car didn’t do what he wanted and he retired it, giving it a hefty kick when he parked it and walked away.
Championship leader Mike ended up in 13th place after setting some decent lap times in the TVR, in fact enough to see him on row 2 next week at Road Atlanta, and you got the feeling there were some big points dropped here especially in the Teams Championship. 15th fell to another championship chasing runner, ABigPieKey. It is all going completely wrong for the CK Motorsport team, after looking like they were in the Championship hunt. The little Alfa is a dream to drive, but totally breathless on the straights and looks like it is suffering the most with the Pi dropped. The team walked away wondering how they could turn this around and save their season. 16th fell to Basslinejunkio, the Escort didn’t have the pace of the two Mercedes in AM, and Bass was also slowed by some lively battles in the race, but he had enough to beat his biggest rival in the class, Wambogini by 7 seconds at the end. Wambogini was the exact opposite of his teammate in the DART Alfa, he was quick early on, in fact passing the sister car on lap 3, but a couple of offs saw him lose a bit of pace to the others in the second half of the race. He is another already looking forward to next season and a different car. For the pair of Aston Martins it was a difficult day. CelticFox had steering issues which turned out to be a suspension failure which pitched him off on lap 3 and put him in the wall and retirement. Newcomer DaveyGallardo was on a steep learning curve with a new car, his Vantage version did look the part, but it was no surprise when he retired on lap 4 with engine issues. He vowed to be back.
So Bradders made mistakes, but they weren’t as costly as the ones made by Mike, and he has closed the gap back down in the championship. For KRR it was a day they needed to make it a three way fight in the teams, whilst although Kinkycowboys stopped the class domination from RangersRick, Rick has still managed to extend his big lead over his rivals, and it will be hard to dislodge him as Class A and Overall Class Champion at the end of the season. Next week we are at Road Atlanta, the top guys are nearly all bottomed out on the lowest Pi, but the AM runners are flying on a high one. Could we get a shock or two before we head down under?
