K-CLASS THUNDER ENDURO ROUND 3 MUGELLO – 2nd OCTOBER 2018
ABIGPIEKEY TAKES CREDIT FOR NOT TAXING THE FUEL AND TYRES.
First ever win for AbigPieKey ~ Alfa 33 does the race without stopping again ~ Brilliant second place for NitroRushmini ~ A good night for the DARE Ferrari’s ~ Good recovery drive for CelticFox ~ Impressive debut and AM win for Basslinejunkio ~ Nikemikerules still leads the championship ~ Support race entertains again.

CQR Rob grabs the lead on lap 1 from ABigPieKey, but it was the Alfa that won the race.
Mugello in Italy always seems to be bathed in warm sunshine, and as the cars rolled up for round 3 of the Thunder Enduro, they weren’t disappointed. A new team was found in the pitlane, as series sponsors K-Class Vapes had entered a car for Basslinejunkio, after buying one of last season’s Cerberus Ford Escort Cosworths. Team leaders, RML were down to one TVR for championship leader NikeMikerules, whilst DART were back to two Alfa Romeo’s as Wambogini had returned. A lot of interest surrounded the AM class, with 6 drivers present and all looking very equal on pace. This had left us with 20 cars in the paddock, but one wasn’t going anywhere, as Hoppers Sport Academy were unable to
spark the engine into life on the Subaru BRZ, meaning AtomStew would be a non starter.
First out the blocks was the Historic Saloon Car Cup, that was a possible series for THORS on another night. The mix of 70s Saloon cars looked fantastic, some racing in period in the BTCC, others like an ex Zakspped Escort in Germany, and even one car was adapted from the Rally scene, as an ex Rothmans Ford Escort appeared. Bradderstig though took advantage of a good grid slot to lead throughout in a Mazda MX3, chased hard by the Opel Kadett of NikeMIkerules. Mike was slightly quicker in the turns but couldn’t live with the Mazda on the straight, and RML were left wondering if DARE had done something “trick” with the gearbox on the rotary engined car. Behind them Ford’s and BMW’s battled throughout, RangersRick coming home third in a Ford Capri, whilst Major Raver made up for a poor opening lap when he was down to 13th, to battle through to 5th with the fastest lap in his ex Gerry Marshall Triplex car. What it all showed is this has the makings of a very good championship when it starts, 70s Fever baby!
So once all that was over and the big cars rolled out for a warm up and the main event. The front row was all Italian with CQR Rob ahead of ABigPieKey, and it was the little light Alfa that got the jump and led the pack into the first corner, the Ferrari right behind. Behind these two were the first of the AWD cars, as RangersRIck and Devil Lord were side by side through the opening corners, holding off Bradderstig and Nikemike, who were close behind. CQR Rob managed to dive down the inside of the Alfa to take the lead at the 4th corner, but then it got worse for the CKMotorsport driver as the little Alfa got the back out at and started to spin in front of the cars behind, contact was unavoidable and the Alfa was dropped to near last, but thankfully undamaged. So across the line on lap 1 and CQR Rob led, Bradders had relieved Rangersrick of second, then in 4th was NikeMike, under pressure for NitroRush and Robraceruk in the first of the Lotus’s. CQR Rob was making his escape out front and started to build up a lead, but behind him it was all so close as KinKycowboys was moving up and travelling at a good pace, ABigPie had started his recovery and NitroRush was challenging for the podium spots in the Corvette. Championship leader Nikemike was busy battling the AWD hordes; the 2 Cerberus Audi’s were having a fantastic time with the KRR Nissan of the Class Championship leader, Rick. After 10 laps and CQR Rob was in front, but now under real pressure from Nitro, who had the Corvette flying around, and before the lap was over the red car was into the lead, the Ferrari unable to live with the American muscle down the long Mugello straight. Behind them and Bradders was still in third, with Mike behind him and still having fun with Rick and the pair of Audi’s, Kinky looking the fastest of the trio at Mugello again. Back in the pack and plenty was going on. ABigPieKey was leading the chase on his recovery from the back, ahead of the two RML Lotus; a couple of small errors had allowed Mad to get in front of his team mate, who was under pressure from the recovering Aston Martin of CelticFox. It had been a difficult start to the race for the Quicksilver car, and he was relegated after an early off, but was now running at a strong pace, and the British Sports Car was moving up through the field at a steady rate.
In AM it was proving to be massively entertaining. Devilsbogeyman had started well and was leading, inside the top 10 in the early laps, but car issues had plagued him once again, and a loss of electrics saw him come to a stop on lap 9. Now the class battle was between new boy Basslinejunkio and Wambogini, these two in a bit of a dice with last season’s Mugello winner BMR Sutton in the second KRR Nissan. Badbeat was third in the class, running ahead of Hoppers who in turn was being chased down by Penfold in the Kia. The DMR car was a bit of a handful over the opening laps, leaving him a drift of the rest, , but Penfold was getting the hang of it and now started his pursuit of the Porsche

Penfold chased Hoppers all race finally catching him with 2 laps to go.
ahead that would last for the remainder of the race.
Out front and Nitro pitted first, Bradders was next in, and then CQR Rob a lap later, this was a real hand rubbing moment for the RML boys, who stayed out a lap longer and grabbed the bonus points for leading. Once the pit stops had played out Nitro was in second ahead of the two Ferrari’s, with the TVR in 5th, but it then dawned on them all that in front was BigPieKey and the Alfa 33, that had proved already this season that could do the race without stopping. It was now a case of whether the team had played a blinder again and were running to the end, the 10 second lead enough with the close pace between the top pair to see him through. Those last few laps were far from free of nerves on the pitwall, the CK Motorsport team were confident they had got the maths right on fuel, the driver relaying that tyres felt fine and in good shape as well. PieKey was a ball of sweat in the cockpit though as he started the last lap 8 seconds to the good, a first victory was his and the teams if they could hold it all together, and he proved he could crossing the line to take the chequered flag after a great recovery drive. He had threatened this at both the opening rounds and pulled it off at the third time of asking, the team quick to point out that they also did a race nonstop last season in the Nissan LM GTR. The victory also throws PieKey into the mix in the overall championship as well. Nitrorush chased hard behind, and was also watchful of the Ferrari in his mirrors, as Bradders had dislodged his teammate and was close but couldn’t get close enough, and the career best second was richly deserved by the top Rookie in season 2. Nitro was overjoyed with the handling and the power of the Corvette and paid tribute to the JDR Team after the race. Third and fourth finished the pair of DARE Ferrari’s and the smiles were clear in the team, it was a massive result in the teams championship and for Bradderstig good points in his battle for the overall title. These two are working really well together.

K-Class Vapes Racing scored a debut AM Class win with Basslinejunkio
So the TVR was finally beaten, but Mike was happy with his days work, not close enough to beat the Ferrari’s he had enough in the end to see off the AWD cars, and fifth kept him in the title lead. Mike was worried about the fast straights of Monza next week with the Pi’ but happy knowing that for the rest of the season, he and Bradders should be equal on Pi and that Mike has the points advantage currently. 6th place was a massive boost to Cerberus after a difficult start to the season. Kinkycowboys is a good driver around here and it showed again, the Audi looking the best it had all season, the testing and development work paying off, the team also finsing a new sterring setup that may transform Kinky’s fortunes from
from now on. As the others made the odd mistake, Kinky kept up his pursuit of the Championship leader and was rewarded for that. Another to impress was 7th placed Mad. Mad held off the late challenge from the recovering CelticFox, Celtic’s drive through the field was fantastic and at times the Aston Martin was the quickest car on track, this really bodes well to Monza next week. For Mad he got the better of his team mate for the first time this season, and drove a near faultless race, 7th places a fantastic reward for that consistency. 9th place was Devil Lord, slightly disappointed with the odd mistake, but happier with the Audi and also overjoyed that he was able to resist the late pressure from RangersRick and Robraceruk. Rick’s Nissan was very quick over the opening laps of each stint, but the team had found that the pursuit of power due to the Pi loss comes at the expense of handling and weight, and that handling and weight had an effect on the tyres, and the car lost that consistency and tyre life quickly. Rick managed to hold on to the Class championship lead, and also kept the second RML Lotus behind him, Robraceruk’ attempts to pass him on the exit of the fast chicane two laps from home, saw him in the gravel and with it a drop to 12th place at the flag. The RML Development team were happy though, the Lotus is fast and the Pi drops for rival’s leaves them with a chance of a podium in one of the upcoming races. The driver to take advantage of Rob’s trip in the sand was Major Raver, who had yet another bad day in the office. The Alfa was fast and far more consistent than it was in Germany, but luck has deserted Raver in the Thunder Enduro. He was put on the grass by a fast starting AWD within yards of the lights, and then another accident that he was the innocent party in, on lap 9 whilst recovering lost him more valuable time. Teammate Wambogini was in a real fight for 13th with new boy BasslineJunkio and BMR Sutton. Sutton was quicker in the Nissan but struggling still and was having an almighty dice, especially with the K-Class Vapes Racing Escort for over half the race. Bass was also mindful that he was in a fight with Wambogini for AM honours, so he was grateful on lap 23 of finally putting a two second distance between himself and the rest, which gave him a debut AM victory. It was a promising debut for the new team, and the team were overjoyed that the Ford Escort which hadn’t turned a wheel since Spa, went so well, even though it had a bit too much understeer for its drivers liking. Wambogini led the chase, but he slightly left the door open on the last corner, to see a clean last gasp dive from BMR Sutton, grab the Nissan 14th place. 16th fell to AM leader Badbeat, who had a lonely run to the flag, nearly two seconds slower than the battle in front a lap, he had the legs on his rivals behind, and extended his championship lead. Behind him was Hoppers Porsche, who was having one of his best drives for a while, and was playing chase with Penfold. Penfold was slowly catching the Hoppers Sport car, and finally he latched on to his prey two laps from home and was swiftly through. In fact his race time in the second half of the race was the equal of Badbeat, and these three look set for another scrap next week at Monza. If only Devilsbogeyman can find the reliability to join them.
So ABigPieKey became our 7th different winner in 13 races, and a popular one at that. Mike and Bradders are leading the way at the top of the tree, but are now aware that they are in a three way scrap for the championship, the CK Motorsport car has advantage on strategy and that will keep him in the championship hunt for the rest of the season.
So Monza next, a power circuit, and one that may bring us winner number 8, as the paddock were talking of the speed we may see form the RML Lotus’s and Quicksilver Aston Mart next weekend, others were left wondering at how CK Motorsport had rolled the dice and landed a double 6 with the Alfa 33s and the strategy advantage it gives them.
