K-CLASS THUNDER ENDURO ROUND 7 MUGELLO – 14th AUGUST 2018
SUTTON MUGS THE REST TO ESCAPE FOR VICTORY
BMR Sutton wins and gives KRR Team Championship lead ~ Great runners up for Kinkycowboys ~ Nikemikerules extends championship with superb 4th ~ CQR Rob on the podium again ~ Good night for RML and Cerberus ~ Some top racing through the field.

BMR Sutton drove off into the sunset, with a faultless performance at Mugello
Back to Europe, and the sunny Italian hills of Mugello. Such is the length of the main straight, that this is one of those circuits that will scare the lower PI cars, and give some of the slower drivers a fighting chance for glory. Twenty cars arrived in the paddock, the Team Cheetah down to one car for Bradderstig and RML had Robraceruk rejoining championship leader Nikemikerules. AtomStew made it on the grid amazingly after issues at customs left him racing to the circuit, arriving just before the pitlane closed.
It was Kenty on pole, with CQR Rob alongside, but it was drama for the second DMR Hyundai of Penfold, whose steering had
locked on the grid, and dispite his frantic efforts to get the starters attention, the field left without him, a bitter blow after his best qualifying of the season. Down to the first corner and Kenty got the launch he was hoping for a held on into the first corner, followed closely from Mad in the first of the two focus’s. Best of the RWD starters was BMR Sutton, and the KRR Lancia dived inside CQR ROB at the first corner and was already looking in no mood to hang around. Kenty’s Hyundai was obviously finding cold tyres a struggle and the back of the DMR car looked very lively, Mad took advantage of this to to snatch the lead 5 corners in, but the excitement of being back in front for the first time since Long Beach, got too much and he went wide into the gravel with the worst results possible. Mad rejoined 7th, but in front of his teammate Norlinracer, and with stones still dropping out the focus the two made contact, giving them both a bit of damage. This all played out well for Sutton, who managed to pass Kenty for the lead as he avoided Mad going off, and it wasn’t all over yet, as Captain Storer spun a corner later as Norlinracer struggled to get round to the pits, and to top it all off AtomStew fell off watching it all happen. Phew, still less than half way around the first lap, and we weren’t finished yet. CQR Rob relieved Kenty of second going up the hill to the fast right hander, the DARE run Lotus was looking fast once again and now Cal fancied pushing the Hyundai further down the order, and got alongside twice in an attempt to get through. So at the end of lap 1, and BMR Sutton had a 2 second lead over CQR Rob, third was the tail happy Kenty chased closely by Carcrazycal, Kinkycowboys, Major Raver, Badderstig, Robraceruk, ABigPieKey and Nikemikerules.

Kinky was in no mood to hang around, he had bravely passed Raver and Bradders on lap 1, and then launched the Escort Cosworth inside of Cal at the second corner of lap 2, he then quickly latched on to the Lotus, and managed to take second around the long right hander towards the end of the lap. Impressive stuff from the Cerbeus driver. For Kenty it wasn’t getting any better, the car looked a real handful, and he was off again, dropping down to 10th place. Both RML cars were on the move and Robraceruk was running well just outside the top 6, but a mistake on lap 4 dropped him back, whilst teammate Mike was homing in on a good result and the battles in front after a steady first lap. Out front and Sutton was in control, Kinky driving superbly behind him was dropping half a second a lap, the Ford quicker on the straight, the Lancia quicker in the faster corner. CQR Rob was falling away from the pair in third, but he had a train of cars chasing him, led by CarcrazyCal, who in turn was having an almighty scrap with the Ferrari of Major Raver. Continuously Raver would get a long side the Alfa, but the grunt of the big Saloon on the main straight would put the Road Atalanta winner back in front. Not once in over half the race, would these two be more than inches apart, it was a fantastic clean close battle. All this had allowed others to catch up. Bradderstig at first but an error dropped him back, and the Team Cheetah Honda looked to be struggling badly for pace and traction, then RangersRick who also then fell back, leaving championship leader Nikemikerules to get closer to the pair.
BMR Sutton was the first to duck in on lap 12, slick stop had him back out behind the Cal and Raver battle, Kinky them followed suit a lap later, CQR Rob following him in on the same lap. This left Cal still towing Raver around the track, and he was trying to play with the DART team, his team running into the pitlane, then running back in, to see if they could get the Ferrari to stop. This went on for the next 2 laps, and the Sauber crew weren’t the only ones at it as Cal was pretending to make his stop and then ducking away from the pit entrance at the last minute.. Finally he stopped on lap 15 and Raver stayed out for two laps to try the undercut, but he was helped by Cal going off on cold fresh tyres on his out lap, the relief in the DART garage clear to see.

Kinkycowboys and CQR Rob both drove superbly for the podium
Raver though was struggling on worn tyres and an errant backmarker, which allowed BMR Sutton to get back past in to the race lead before the Ferrari stopped. Sutton now had a 10 second lap over the Cerberus Escort and the two seemed equally matched, Kinky driving fantastically in second, knew only an error by the Lancia driver would see him in with a chance of victory. BMR Sutton is far to experienced for this, and a lack of lapped runners due to the close pace of the field, meant he had precious few cars to trip him up. Sutton crossed the line to take his third victory of the season and although he led most the race he worked hard for it. For Kinky it was a fantastic result that he and the team had been promising all season, and he was overjoyed. He worked hard in those early laps to get into the podium positions and the result was fully deserved. Team mate Devil Lord was in 7th, capping off a great day for the team but rueing the first lap for the sister car that may of seen Devil further up the order.
The battle for the final podium spot was far from over as Major Raver was now all over the Lotus of CQR Rob, 3 times the Ferrari got a head, only for the Lotus to get back through on the cutback. What was making this more difficult for the squabbling pair, were the two RML Mazda’s now looming large in their mirrors. Mike was driving brilliantly in the under Pi car and bringing his team mate with him, who was having his strongest race of the season, and both fancied the podium. Lap 22 and Rob makes a slight mistake out of the second right hander, Raver manages to slow to avoid the two ending up in the gravel and Mike was through on the Ferrari and now trying to steal the final podium spot off the recovering Lotus. This though helped the Lotus driver, as the Mazda was defending from the Ferrari and it gave him the slightest daylight to hold on for his second podium of the season. CQR Rob was thoroughly delighted and so was the team, especially as it had beaten its big brother team for the second time in a week. Mike held off Raver for 4th place, and some wondered if he might slow the Ferrari to allow teammate Robraceruk to challenge and grab the extra team points, but he didn’t and the 4th place puts him in a fantastic position to claim the drivers’ championship before the final round in 3 weeks. For Raver it was a good result but a frustrating day, not in one lap did he cross the line more than 40 foot behind another car. For Robraceruk it was a fantastic return to the series. The early laps had slowed his progress slightly, but once in clean air he was one of the fastest on track, he felt that with a bit more rubber left on the tyres he may have had the pace to grab the final podium spot. The 6th place leaves him still on 750Pi and you would be foolish to bet against him scoring a big result next week at Sebring, especially with the outright pace he showed here, bonus point for the third fastest race lap proved that.

In 8th was Mad, who was disappointed with the final result after the promise of the early laps. Such was the closeness of the whole field; it was more difficult for him here to make up the time. For teammate Norlinracer it was an early retirement, fuel feed issues causing the engine to jump in and out, and the team retired the car instead of causing any damage that would give them a heavy week before next week. Kenty ended up 9th in the crazy handling Hyundai, ahead of Cal, both knowing they could have had better results, whilst in 11th was Bradderstig whose Honda struggled greatly around the Mugello circuit and he was strangely off the pace of his rivals.
Kenty spent much of his entertaining the crowd with his sideways Hyundai
Rumours in the pitlane were rife that the preseason championship favourite has already agreed to dive elsewhere in season 2. 12th was RangersRick in the second KRR Lancia, who had a frustrating day looking at the back of the Alert-It BMW of Captain Storer. The BMW had amazing pace on the straights, the AWD Lancia did not, so there was nothing that Rick could do bar a mistake from his rival and that happened 3 from home, but by then the top 10 had gone and he was left in his lowest position of the season. For Storer it was a promising run in the BMW that is now getting closer to the front of the field. 14th ended up being the best CelticFox could do, the Viper quick, but it was just a day when all could go wrong for the Quicksilver driver. The same being said for A Big Pie Key, who was expected to go well around this circuit but struggled for pace after a successful 80s Hot Hatch Heaven Race earlier in the day. 16th was Atom Stew, who drove possibly his best race of the season, after it transpired after the race, that the team had fitted the wrong engine management system, which left him short of boost to the tune of 100bhp. Lastly was the second DARE Lotus of Hoppers, who used the race as a bit of a test session, and after the retirement of Devilsbogeyman, he ran alone.
So what a race, close battles through the field, great defensive driving by some, and clean fantastic overtaking by others. The Championship now heads to Sebring and the possibility for rain. Nikemikerules now just needs to keep grabbing the top 10 results, but he knows that his team are in the hunt for Team prize to. But first they have to catch KRR, who have grabbed the biggest point’s gap so far this season after Sutton’s fantastic win.
