J47TEE made no mistakes and drove to superb vicotry in the Hoppers R&D Mitsubishi Evo 6

The moods had been gloomy for many over the week leading up to Virginia, the track is tight and twisty, and described as Long Beach without the walls.  Most were struggling for consistency, but many laps of testing were paying off and cars were staying on the track instead of resembling expensive lawn mowers.  The gloom was also the threat of rain that had been hanging over the circuit all week, but as we got closer to race day, the rain was arriving later and later through the day, and many had fingers crossed they would miss it.  Some though were hoping for a sprinkle of the wet stuff to give them a better chance.  The AWD runners were a very happy lot, this being a circuit likely to suit them, and to add to this, any rain might highlight that further.  Up at the front, last week’s top 2 were not so hopeful, CQR Posh Rob aim was just to beat Bradderstig and keep up his championship challenge, whilst Major Raver had been setting up both the DART Alfa’s, and found the 50Pi difference was worth just short of 3 seconds around this circuit.

The entry was a little different from the usual.  We had a new runner in RotaryRhys, who had leased the ex DARE BMW M1 that had been seen in Bradderstig’s hands in preseason testing, and the biggest surprise was the two Integra’s being rolled off the back of the GRT/JDR trailer, as RangersRick had returned to the grid.  Business commitments had kept ABigPieKey away, and Cerberus had been unable to repair the second Chevrolet for KinkyCowboys.   Whilst for the first time in the history of the Championship, RML were missing, although the Development team were at full strength.

The support race was a lively affair for the 80s Hot Hatch Heaven, with Honda CRX’s to the fore, and victory went to Maj2012 after a fantastic dice with Pronag in the early laps.

So to the main event and CQR Rob lined up on pole, under sunny skies, waiting for the attack from behind and it came quickly, as Empire and JT on row two were side by side and soon up front, long before the first corner arrived, and joining them from a lightning get away from  JRush.  Everyone worried about the first corner, and those worries intensified as Pronag took to the grass to avoid a stalling BMR Sutton, and Devilsboogeyman found himself on the infield before he had even crossed the line.  The first corner was mostly perfect though, although Pronag and Sutton had contact, the pack managing to avoid them, but the startline issues had again hit the KRR Nissan and it rolled on to the grass whilst the driver tried to restart the engine, doing so having lost nearly a whole lap.  The front two from the grid were quickly shuffled down to 5th and 7th, whilst JRush was on a mission and was through into the lead, Empire having his mirrors full of two Hoppers R&D Mitsubishi Evo’s.  Although the Integra was fast, it wasn’t as fast as those behind and he soon had a mirror full of cars and a slight mistake saw Empire slide back through into first, to lead the cars over the line for the first time, JRush still in second, AtomStew third, J47TEE fourth, Posh Rob 5th, and the top 10 completed by Robraceruk, Major Raver, Kenty up to an impressive 8th from the back, Mad and championship leader Bradderstig.

Kenty scored his first podium of the season.

Mad drove brilliantly to second place.

Lap two saw the two Evo’s swap position, and then both managed to relegate JRush back to 4th.  It took them no time to home in on the Subaru of Empire, but whilst J47TEE managed to get through, AtomStew found this more difficult.  J47TEE’s car lacked straight line speed, but it was a rocket out of the corners, and he was able to build up a comfortable advantage to the chasing pack in these early stages, nearly a second quicker through the second section of the lap.  Empire had his mirrors full, as Robraceruk was now on the tail of AtomStew in third, and the Honda had bought Kenty with him, flying in the newly liveried and rebuilt Renault Alpine.  A mistake on lap 4 dropped him back to 9th, but the disappointment on the RML wall was quickly replaced by the performance of the second, AWD version of the Prelude, driven by Mad, who was now up to 5th.  Out front and J47TEE was holding firm, 4 seconds to the good, Empire was still second, but now it was Kenty up to third and Mad 4th, as Stew had made an error and was now battling again with JRush for 5th place.  Championship wise and Bradderstig was right behind his rival CQR Posh Rob, fighting for 9th place, these two very much on a damage limitation exercise.

Further back in the top 10, the racing was very close and every error was being punished with a position drop.  Pronag had had a lively opening few laps, but had now settled into a decent pace and he was moving up, but an off on lap 9 sent him in to the pits and the first stop of the day.  New boy, Rhys was also showing some massive raw pace in the BMW, although the brakes were proving to be a bit unpredictable, and a few cars were being hit into the first corner braking zone, for Devil Lord not with the best consequences as the Escort was sent in to the wall.  The returning RangersRick, was having a lively few laps, as he got used to racing again, a few offs losing him positions, but then the clean laps seeing him making them back up, and he was heading in to the top 10 and getting quicker and quicker.  Another picking up places was Maj in the second Empire Subaru, and he was taking his time and the rewards that were coming with that.  Down at DART it was contrasting fortunes.  Wambogini was having a great little run and moving through into the midfield, like Rick a couple of offs early on, but now he was in a rhythm and lapping well.  Teammate Major Raver though was not, the 675Pi was hurting him badly, and he was drifting out to around 15th place and not making any impression at all.  Another with a bit of a up and down race was CelticFox, who had started poorly, the big Pontiac a handful in the early laps, but he too was finding a rhythm and now joining the midfield scrap.

Out front and J47TEE was comfortable, and as the pitstops started, he stayed out longer than his rivals and resumed after his stop on lap 22 still in first place.  Mad had now found himself second, and he was trying all to close the gap, but these two were equally matched and it was the time lost getting through the field in the first 10 laps, that proved to be the decider in their battle, and with it give J47TEE the gap he needed.  Unlike Le Mans, no mistakes were being made by the Hoppers R&D driver, and in fact it was an utterly faultless drive.  Showing how good the car was in the corners and how well it had been driven, J47TEE was clocked as the slowest car on the speedtrap down the start straight.  The Mitsubishi crossed the line after 45minutes, the driver understandably overjoyed with the win.  For Mad he was equally overjoyed with second and his and the team’s best result this season, although he one eye on the Renault Alpine closing behind, he knew without any mistakes second was his, and thus Kenty was unable to get on terms.  For Kenty and DMR, it has been a difficult season, getting the car set up and races missed, but here Kenty showed the skills seen in season 1 and gave the team a massive moral boost that might even see Team Manager Penfold come out of retirement before the end of the season.  To add to their joy, a flyer 3 laps from home, gave Kenty the fastest lap of the race.  Don’t discount another podium in the next two races for the team.

Devil Lord had a difficult race in the Cerberus Escort.

RangersRick returned and made his way through the field.

Whilst these three were clear, as Empire had a mirror full of cars all race.  He looked to be under real pressure from Wambogini, the Alfa catching the Subaru as we headed into the last 10 laps, this was helped by a back marker deciding it want to race the 4th placed Subaru!  Empire finally got past, but now Wambogini had to try and do the same and two laps of being held up resulted in the Alfa going off in an attempt to pass, and allowing the train of JRush, RangersRick, Maj and AtomStew through.  Now this group had the same issues and it was game on to which one would come out top, one white Audi was not proving popular.  JRush and RangersRick were fighting hard, both wanting to take the 5th place, but careful not to allow Maj to sneak through, he though watching for Stew behind and the recovering Wambogini.  Maj’s task was made easier by AtomStew retiring 2 laps from home, the Mitsubishi a box of neutrals, but he was unable to find a gap and followed the Integra’s over the line, JRush engine going bang in the biggest possible way as he took the flag, the car pulling off before the first corner in plumes of smoke.  All from 4th to 8th had enjoyed the race and the battles, and Rick had a big beaming smile on his face, although you did have to wonder where he would be in the Championship if not for the missed two rounds.  Just behind these were Celtic in 9th, the Quicksilver driver convinced he would have been in on the battle had it not been for a few mistakes, but a head of the Championship leader Bradderstig.  Nikemike’s shock non entry, gave Bradders a chance to put some points on him, and his luck was further in when the SWR Subaru which was running just ahead, had a failure on lap 22 that saw the winner from Maple Valley roll to a halt in retirement.  SWR are believed to be unable to attend Indy next week, and this is all heading in Bradders direction Championship wise.  Next should have been RotaryRhys, who had shown some excellent speed in the BMW, and could have been higher if not for a second stop.  The rookie had found a few issues with brakes, and the stewards have been clear on pushing other cars off to pass, which sadly had happened a little too often, and the penalty issued at the end dropped him down to 14th place.

This promoted Robraceruk to 11th, the rear wheel drive version of the Honda S2000, wasn’t on the same par as the AWD version of his team mate, and although the driver still believes in the car, it was another disappointing result for a driver last season regularly in and around the top 6.  Devil Lord came home next, the Escort not competitive in a straight-line, but also the victim of a bit of ruffing up, he was just glad to keep his lead in Class A, every point now important with the two Integra drivers hot on his tail.  12th was Badbeat, and the winner of the AM class.  Badbeat has watched his lead in the class come down of late, but he was pleased to reverse that trend and also close the gap to the guys a head on pace, which he continues to do, in fact he was battling with a number of ProAm and Pro drivers through the race.  Second in class was Pronag, his early laps were a problem and he had to make two stops, but after this he showed some brilliant pace, the problem was he did it racing with cars a lap ahead of him, and was hit with a penalty that dropped him  to the last finisher on the road.  15th ended up Major Raver, he admitted he could do no more with the car, and pleased he was back up the Pi for next week.

So the non finishers, well Stew was unlucky at the end, but it was another painful day for the AM pair of Hoppers and Devilsboogeyman.  Hoppers ran on his own at the back for the first 27 laps until the car over heated and stopped, whilst Devilsboogeyman had retired the tyre eating under steering Honda long before the end.  Next season can’t come quick enough for the Fife Flyer.  As for KRR, it was a horrible race.  The first lap issues had left BMR Sutton nearly a lap down, and his pace soon saw him being lapped, he to retired before half distance, hoping the next leg of the North America tour will bring better results.

So JT fully deserved the win, as did the other two on the podium, the three of them driving superb races.  The three of them not only getting wet with the bubbly, but with the clouds that had threatened all week finally opening.   Next week sees us at Indianapolis and a power circuit.  Will it be enough to give Bradders a chance to return to the front of the field and cement his place at the top of the Championship?
