K-CLASS VAPES ROUND 5 - LE MANS
DEVIL LORD RAINS SUPREME
Devil Lord wins first ever race, after race long dice ~ J47TEE crosses the line first but is penalised ~ Maj2012 beats Major Raver for second ~ Nikemikerules back in the title race ~ GRT drivers unhappy ~ Mad drives well for 6th place ~ Bradderstig holds on to championship lead ~ Wet weather makes it difficult for some ~ Support race sees Basslinejunkieo take off ~ Pushing to pass is the buzz words during and after the race.

Devil Lord won in the stewards room, but it was a well earned and hard faught victory.
It wasn’t whether it would be wet when the teams arrived in France, but whether it would be rain or snow. It turned out to be the non white stuff, but the circuit was very wet and cold as a capacity entry arrived. It was more than capacity though, as 25 cars entered for the 24 spots on the gird. Sadly RGreenwood, who was returning as he does fortnightly, was the unlucky reserve, and most wished the grid could be 25 cars so as not to leave the BMW stuck in the paddock. The support race was for the Formula Mazda cars and Bradderstig took the victory, knowing it was his day when he overtook Basslinejunkieo, by driving under the AM Champion whilst he was busy crashing and being launched in to the air!
The entry list as said earlier, saw a number of returning cars. Again we only had one SWR Subaru, as Scarlet had vacated after her promising showing at Mugello, to be replaced by ex series leader Posh Rob. J47TEE was back in the second Evo, as was AM Championship leader Badbeat. These three were all at the back of the grid, but the front row was where the action was expected to be. Bradderstig on pole and he was ready for a hard race, the Camaro now down on power, even though the rain would be useful, whilst Major Raver alongside was feeling confident after some strong testing pace in the first of the DART Alfa’s. The stewards had been keen to warn all of sensible behaviour, especially on the run up to the Dunlop Chicane and as the cars launched off the grid, the front row were a bit too occupied with each other allowing Empire from row 2 and Devil lord from row 3 to have us briefly at 4 abreast on the run down to the Dunlop Chicane. Empire looked at first to have the drop but Devil Lord managed to beat all into the chicane, whilst Raver importantly got the exit right and beat the Subaru out of the corner to take second, important for him as he was worried about being stuck before the blue Impreza early on. For Bradders it was the start he didn’t want as both of the Acura Integra’s were all over him. Most had made it through the chicane unharmed, but J47TEE starting at the back hadn’t and skittled rather embarrassingly, his Hoppers Sport team boss off the track in to a spin, he also then overtook off the circuit which had caught the eye of those in race control. Raver was worried about the opening lap with the Alfa not working its tyres, but he needn’t as in fact he seemed to be in the best shape and dived inside the Escort to take the lead through the double right hander on to the back straight. Devil Lord thought about having a go back under baking for the chicane, but backed out and this allowed Raver to lead the cars across the line for the first lap, just over a second ahead of Devil Lord in second, third Mike after a great opening lap, 4th was Maj2012, who had displaced his teammate who had been having a few wide moments on cold tyres. The two GRT Acura’s were having a decent opening lap and were both in the top 10, as were the RML Honda’s and KRR Nissan’s. Up to 11th was J47TEE, who had been rather robust, where as other quick drivers who started at the back were making slower progress, Kinky in 15th, Posh Rob in 19th.
Raver was away out front and extended his lead on lap 2 and 3, and it looked like the little Alfa was on for the win, but lap 4 saw a change as Devil Lord started to close back in. The Escort driver was now happy of where he could brake and those confidence levels had him closing back in, and not far behind him was Mike and Maj. By lap 3 J47TEE was up to 5th, and a lap later that was third, but it was not a rapid progress that had pleased rivals, due to the contact being made. He divided in very late to take second on the following lap, and quickly homed in on the leader. There was no doubt that J47TEE was the quickest runner here, his brilliant fight back on his debut last season at Le Mans, proves he is a star around the French track, so it was perhaps a surprise the emergency in which he was determined to get to the front. On the 6th lap he was just under a second behind Raver as they crossed the line, the Evo didn’t have any advantage on straight line speed, so the Alfa looked safe from any dive into the Dunlop Chicane. In fact the Escort was faster on the straight stuff and Devil was tucking in nicely behind. As the Alfa braked though for the corner, it received a hefty thump from the Hoppers R&D car, spinning it around and off the track. Raver was far from impressed and rejoined back in 5th, with slight damage. J47TEE slowed on the exit of the chicane and let the Alfa though, but the accident had left him now behind Devil Lord, Mike and Maj. Raver was passed by J47TEE half a lap later, and a few corners on they had both snuck through past Maj as he went wide through the final sequence of corners. Devil was now out front but Mike sensed a win and a chance to get in the title battle, and took the lead, only for the Escort to retake it. This had allowed J47TEE back on the scene, the EVO trying to go around the outside on the run down to the final two right handers. He run out of room and was heading for the pit exit, but instead of backing out he tried to come back on track, hitting the RML Mazda and pushing it off track. Mike managed to stay ahead of Raver, who had now latched back on, and had Maj in very close attention.

J47TEE won on the road and was very quick all race.

Mad led the midfield scrap with an impressive 6th place.
The rest of the field had been dropped, but some were having their own drama. RangersRick and JRush had started well as usual, but the Integra was poor on braking at Le Mans and was being bullied back through the field, the two being overtaken a few times by drivers giving them a push wide. Neither was happy, and both had threatened over the radios to park up and retire. Also not happy was Maj2012 team mate Empire, who after losing a few places on the early laps, was pushed into the gravel at the final corner, dropping him down the field. Bradderstig was still running inside the top 10, but he had a lot of company, as Bassline and Posh Rob were busy making up places after poor qualifying.
So back at front and J47TEE now chased after the Escort, again an overly late braking move, but Devil Lord saw it and got out of the way with no contact made. The Cerberus with Ford driver admitting that he wasn’t willing to take any risks in defending and damaging the car, so letting his rival go was the sensible option. J47TEE was now in the lead, and showed his lightning pace, instantly lapping over a second and half faster than anyone else. His lead grew quickly, but the drama behind was far from over. Mike, Raver and Maj were still close to the Escort and reeling it in, Raver and Maj dropping a couple of seconds back as they squabbled over 4th place. Devil was the first to pit, but it all went painfully wrong and he slid and hit the tyre wall on the pit entrance. The following lap Mike was in, and repeated the feat, although not as heavily. Maj entered next as did the leader, such was J47TEE pace, that he somehow rejoined in first place. Both Maj and Mike were ahead of Devil Lord, so we all waited for the last stopper who was Major Raver and the Alfa rejoined behind Maj, but ahead of Mike and Devil Lord. Maj and Raver were now fighting for second and this bought the other two back into the dice, Devil though was flying in this second phase and was leading the charge. On lap 21 they were all together, and Devil Lord quickly passed both the Subaru and Alfa to take second place. Maj and Raver weren’t giving up, but Mike was sensing although he could stay with the three, his Mazda was becoming more and more of a handful and picking up a clean lap and watching at close quarters maybe the better strategy. Maj tried hard to get back past and as they entered the last lap, the three were line astern. J47TEE was comfortable out font, and crossed the line an unbelievable 43 seconds up the road. Raver though was fancying a go at the pair in front, Devil was defending from Maj and in turn the Subaru from the Alfa, As much as each tried they could not change the order on the last lap, but it had been a fantastic battle by them, and also Mike who finished 5 seconds behind them.
Long before the cars had even crossed the finish line, protests had gone in over the winner. The stewards were clear before the race, and it was no surprise when a 1 minute time penalty was added to J47TEE. The winner was utterly disappointed, but accepted the steward’s decision, plus apologising to the contact he made with Major Raver. In reflection his haste had cost him dear, as his race pace was so dominant, that he would of won had he passed cleanly. This promoted Devil Lord to first and the victory he threatened towards the end of the season. He was surprised to be on the podium, he felt the Escort was good here but didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. Maj was delighted with second, the EmpireMSport team proving to be a great new edition to the series. Major Raver was disappointed with third, he felt without the spin early on he may have won, although like Devil Lord he didn’t expect to be as competitive as he was, so the result was a plus in that sense to both. Mike ended up fourth, the last to gain with the penalty to the Hoppers R&D car. Mike is now well in the championship battle, and he grabbed the clean lap he needed to put him ahead of his rivals on the grid next week.
So the best of the rest, was equally as entertaining, Mad spent most of the race in a fantastic battle with anyone he could find, and he managed to beat them all. But it was a close run thing, as he and PieKey started the last lap side by side. The Nissan was once again a very lively car and the backend had caught his team mate, BMR Sutton out a number of times, leaving him off the track and near the back. Mad managed to hold off Piekey and his third place in Class A was also very welcome. JRush was next up, but elevated to 7th after other penalties were dished out. He was another driver not happy with some of the robust passes under braking, and believed he had the paintwork of about 6 other cars on the back or side of his Integra. Team mate RangersRick was even more livid and talked of banger racing and lack of respect on track. It was not a happy garage down at GRT, and as we went to press rumours were rife that the Class A leader has sold his stake in the team to his team mate and retired. It would be a massive loss to the championship if only one of the shrill sounding Integra’s show up next week in Germany.

The battle for the lead was superb at times.

The champion is back in the hunt.
Posh Rob knew this would be a difficult race with starting at the back, and prefers the BRZ in the dry as well, but he was happy in 9th and had enjoyed some good dices, especially with title rival Bradderstig and Basslinejunkieo. Basslinejunkieo had driven up to 10th from a lonely start and tried everything over the last two laps to get as high as 7th, so close were this group of cars, in fact as close as the leading 4 up a head. Bradders followed these home for 11th, and pleased with damage control done on the Camaro, but mindful that his long time rival over at RML is now on his coat tails in the championship. 12th went to Robraceruk, who was once again fast on the straights, a car difficult to overtake but also to stop. Rob is usually a fan of the wet races, but his testing pace from earlier in the week had suggested a dry race may have suited him better. Behind these Kinky led a close battle which included the second Alfa of Wambogini, CelticFox, and the recovering Pronag and Empire. Pronag had gone very well in testing in the Audi, and early on looked like he could run in the top 10, but he was another to be shuffled off and the lost time left him further back than hoped. Empire once again had some great pace, and the luck when it comes will see him where his teammate was in future races.
20th belonged to the returning Badbeat, who had a fabulous cat and mouse race with the Renault of Penfold. Penfold was on the pace of the Lancia here, and the car has been transformed since Bradderstig took on some testing and development work on it. Penfold buzzed the gearbox early on and this time lost left him 15 seconds off the Lancia, the two so evenly matched, that that is how it stayed for the rest of the race. Expect these pair to have a wonderful dice for the rest of the season. Splitting them was the second Evo of AtomStew, which had a miserable race and topped off a very disappointing race for the team. “Just didn’t handle how I hoped and it was slow on the straights”, was all the driver had to say after the race.
23rd was Hoppers, but the Clio showed some promise, the first lap being punted off and an extra stop for repairs meant he lost a lot of time, but his lap times compared really well to the others in AM, in fact he lapped faster than Badbeat. Lastly was Devilsboogeyman, whose front wheel drive Honda was impossible in the wet weather and Fife Flyer nearly retired the understeering car, but persisted to the end.
After the race the conversation was on driving standards. This season they have been superb, the battles at Mugello were a joy, and the hope is this was just a one race blip. The stewards have come down hard on a number of drivers and hopefully normal service is resumed next week in Germany. But lets not get away from the fact, that some of the racing in difficult conditions, was brilliant as well, and for many it was a great enjoyable race.
It’s the long race at Hockenheim and all are back to 725Pi for that. Bradderstig now leads Mike in the Championship, but it is far from a two horse race.

The Formula Mazda's were a superb support race.

Driver of the Day: Devil Lord, faught back to win, with some great dicing after pitlane error problems
Talking point: Push to pass, and what is rubbing and what is unfair.

Bradders kept his championship lead.

Raver spun out of first place, was quick early on.
