K-CLASS VAPES ROUND 4 - MUGELLO
BRADDERSTIG WINS A BATTLEFEAST
Second win of the season for Bradderstig ~ RangersRick a superb runner up ~ Massive battle for third that goes down to the last corner ~ Fantastic recovery drives by Major Raver and Nikemikerules ~ Maj2012 and Devilsboogeyman cause shock in Support race ~ Superb dicing through the field ~ 1 point between the top 2 in the Championship.

RangersRick did all he could to keep off the challenge from the Cerberus pair, Bradderstig though running out the winner.
Mugello is a circuit that always manages to divide opinion. The long straight has always put an premium in the past on power, but some in the paddock believed that this season maybe different, and we could be in for a David and Goliath situation. Power would obviously be key down the long straight, but good handling and set would be needed around some of the fast and challenging corners around the back of the circuit. Mugello, like Long Beach last week is a circuit to punish errors, not race ending maybe like the walls of the American street circuit, but the gravel traps that are close to the kerbs and would slow you down if you dropped a wheel into them.
The grid was once again of a high standard. Championship leader CQR Posh Rob was missing, doing community service, but team mate Scarlet Witch was back in her SWR Subaru. One joker in the paddock, querying whether the team actually owned two of the BRZ’s. Also missing was AM leader Badbeat who was sadly unwell, but he wasn’t the only one feeling it. ABigPieKey and Major Raver were both suffering from man flu, and the KRR Racing driver was really struggling and not looking forward to the race ahead.
The Support race was for the VW Beetles, around the shorter version of the circuit, and front row starter Devilsboogeyman lead for the first ten laps. Whilst the pack traded panels and diced heavily, the Fife Flyer made his escape and it wasn’t until lap 10 the Maj2012 caught and passed the Redbull sponsored car. Maj held on to a fantastic win, and Devilsboogeyman was overjoyed with his second place, holding off BMR Sutton’s last lap attack for the runners up spot.
So the cars went to the grid for the start of the main event, but we had a space on row 9, as the Hoppers Sport Clio was stuck in the pits, and no matter how much the team tried, the little French car failed to fire up. It left the driver, Hopperswwfc, far from happy as he was using the race to run a one off livery to promote Dementia, a subject close to him and his family. The rest of the grid formed up fine and the rundown to turn one was liable to be entertaining, with the two Cerberus Camaro’s, quick on launch, surrounded by a number of AWD cars that are even quicker. Kinky made a good start from pole, but he couldn’t compete with RangersRick, who flew off the line in the Acura. Kinky did his upmost to stop AtomStew coming down the inside, but found his former teammate, Devil lord, using the space superbly on the outside to mug him into turn one. On the exit of that first turn the Camaro held a tighter line and managed to get the power down quicker allowing him to pinch second back before they broke for turn 2. Team mate Bradders was having things a bit more difficult though and was shuffled down to 8th place, whilst AtomStew and JRush95 who had both been in the top 6 into the first corner, were back in the pack after dropping a wheel into the gravel. Also being shuffled to the back of the field, were Major Raver and Nikemikerules, these two had started a couple of rows from the back anyway after poor qualifying, and the first few corners did nothing to lift their moods early on.
Rick crossed the line to lead lap 1, just over a second ahead of Kinkycowboys, Devil Lord was third, Mad a superb 4th in the Honda, BMR Sutton having a wild ride on cold tyres in the Nissan was under pressure from Bradderstig and Robraceruk, ABigPiekey, Basslinejunkieo and Maj completed the top 10. Maj teammate at Empire Motorsport, EmpireMSport, had picked up a bit of damage on that first lap, and found the car down on power. The team and driver made a decision to stay on track and try and make it to the pit stop window to minimise the time lost. Kinky was soon on the back of the GRT Acura, but getting passed was a completely different story and for the next 8 laps, these two battled mightily for the lead, no matter what the Camaro tried, it was unable to force its way past. RangersRick has always been a quick driver, but in the last 3 rounds he has been driving at possibly the best in his career, faster with few mistakes, and here he was showing that once again. Bradderstig was on the move in the second Camaro and by lap 6, he had joined the pair. Firstly he disposed of BMR Sutton, who was working really hard to keep the tail happy Nissan in a straight-line, and then the Cerberus run Escort of Devil Lord, who was once again driving really well in the “old girl”. Bradderstig was now looking for any opportunity and on lap 8 he got it. Kinky went for the inside at turn 3 but backed out, the defending though slowed Rick as well, and Bradders took advantage stealing a pass on both. Rick tried mightily over the next lap to get his lead back, but any attempts to do so were made impossible by the defending he had to do to stop a Cerberus 1-2. Bradderstig took advantage of this and made his escape, leaving the two behind to continue their squabble until the first stops.

Bassline took his best ever result with 4th place.

Pronag Racing took the AM honours.
These two weren’t the only two dicing in the first half of the race. Mad made a mistake that had dropped him back to the lower parts of the top 10 and into the hands of the second GRT Acura. The two Vtec engine cars were rapid down the start straight, regularly side by side, and they were battling like it was for the win, great stuff! The second RML Development car was also in a great little scrap, with the Pontiac of CelticFox, although both drivers were bit further back than they would have liked. Another dice that was forming up nicely was for 4th place, as BMR Sutton and Basslinejunkieo were homing in on the Escort of Devil Lord. Sutton a past winner here, was using all his knowledge and skills to keep the horribly handling Nissan in a straight line, whilst the Lancia of Bass is a former winning car and Bass was loving it, closing in on the pair ahead. The second Nissan, of Dykey was also looking rather tail happy at the back. For a while the winner of last season’s round here, was looking like joining his teammate in the battle a head, but a trip to the gravel scuppered that. So ill was the driver the battle now became about finishing the race, as the car and race started to drain what strength he had left. Now into the top 10 were the two from the back. Nikemike had been picking cars off, such was the closeness of the field this was not an easy task, but he found himself running in 8th. Major Raver had been doing the same and was around 5 seconds behind in the little Alfa, the car slow on the straight but a joy around the back of the circuit. When it got into clean air for the first time we found out how fast it was, as the DART driver dropped it into a sub 2minute, although a dirty lap.
KinkyCowboys stopped for fuel hoping for the undercut, but he dropped into traffic, then followed by BMR Sutton and RangersRick. Bradderstig was the last of the top 4 to duck in on lap 15, and this gave Mike a lap in the lead, the Champion again thinking of every way possible to grab a point, something that may prove so valuable at the end of the season to him. Once everything had settled down Bradderstig was still out front, and Rick was second, but now Rick had some breathing space for the first time in the race, as the pit stops had given Kinky a new battle, with BMR Sutton and Basslinejunkieo. The GRT Acura driver was over the moon with the peace and admitted after the race that he doubted he could have kept up the defence for the second half of the race, the concentration needed was intense. Bradderstig reeled off the laps for victory untroubled, whilst Rick did the same for second. After the race these two found themselves top of the Championship table with only a point separating them.
So was that it? No, was the answer. Everyone else was bang at it. Kinky and Sutton were fighting hard for third, and Basslinejunkieo was determined to rob them both of it. The Lancia looked the most balanced, it didn’t quite have the straight-line speed of the other two cars, but Bass knew one mistake and he would grab it with both hands. Every lap he was waiting for Sutton to go off, the Nissan looked like it wanted to take part in a drift event rather a straight race, but the Wigan driver was impressing all with his car control. For Kinky he was again battling hard, something that he had been doing all race, but his earlier stop had been his undoing. Not only had it lost him time in the battle for second, but also he was running longer in this stint on the tyres and they were now starting to go off. Tyres are always an issue at Mugello, especially at the front and as we started lap 21 Kinky found out to his cost as he went wide and Bass was through. He tried to get back through, but Bass flew through the middle section of the lap, and Kinky was now looking over his shoulder instead of what was in front of him. Raver had rejoined from his stops in 8th, but was really flying, the Alfa passing Nikemike, and then the 6th placed Escort of Devil Lord on lap 20, and he was now homing in on the battle for third. Raver made short work of the tyre troubled Kinky on lap 23, passing of all places through the left handed fast downhill section that connects the short circuit to the full one. Raver had 5 second to make up on the squabbling pair in front, and they were really squabbling. Bass was now in his highest ever Thunder Enduro position in 4th, and wanted to go one better that with a podium. Twice going into the last lap he had a look, but couldn’t quite get close enough. BMR Sutton held on right in front of the Lancia, with the little Alfa right behind the pair of them. For Sutton this was possibly his best drive ever in the Thunder Enduro. Although he has won races and had many podiums, he has never had to fight a car that handled like the Nissan had for whole race without a mistake. The team after the race had found a setup issue with the ride height and wondered if this had been the cause of the handling issues. Bassline was overjoyed with 4th, he had loved the battle and how much confidence the Lancia had given him to push. The Northern Monkies driver had also impressed earlier in the Beetle race as well, and walked away with his best ever result in the Thunder Enduro, and driver of the day award as well.
Raver was another smiling after the race. 5th from last was impressive, especially with the flu he was suffering, and some of his passes in race were up with the best you will see. Team mate Wambogini had proved the little Alfa was a great car back home in Italy. Again lacking time to test, Wambogini found the opening laps a learning experience, and learnt to find a few gravel traps as well, but his pace got stronger as the race went on and he too started passing and moving up through the field, just missing out on 12th place, having had a great late dice with Robraceruk. For RML Development, it was a hard race. Some had tipped the Honda’s for the top 5 here, and in the early laps both were fast, especially on the straights, but they ate tyres and none more so than the RWD version of Robs. Rob managed to win the battle for 12th with Wambogini, but Mad found himself just outside the points in 16th. The early laps were good to the Tetley sponsored car, but it started to fall back and his battle as spoken of earlier with JRush was highly entertaining. He will glad for the more AWD friendly circuit of Le Mans next week. Kinky just managed to win the drag race for 6th with Mike as the two battled across the line. Mike had been worried about this race, the team and driver not happy with the Mazda, and everything they had tried just seemed to make things worse. A chat with Bradderstig had given RML some ideas and the car was a lot better come race day, and you sensed the Champion had really enjoyed his drive through the field. The points are also racking up, and as the winner said after the race, you would be a fool to write Mike off in the championship chase, especially as his Pi is favourable compared to those around him.

Raver and Nikemike had a difficult first lap.

Close battles were seen through the whole field.
Not far behind these was Devil Lord, who had driven a near perfect race, just lacking the last bit of speed at this circuit that doesn’t play to AWD. He was comfortably clear of JRush who finished 9th, and was in the belief that this was all he could get from the car in Italy. Rounding out the top 10 was the impressive Maj, in the first of the Empire Subaru’s. Maj had far from a quiet race, always finding drivers to dice with, especially late on with the second KRR Nissan of ABigPieKey, which ended up in the Nissan receiving a tap spinning it round and falling down to 11th. ABigPieKey just wanted his bed and rest by the end of it all. For Maj first points were on the board, and it could have been two cars had the team not miscalculated the time lost for Empire. Empire stopped on lap 10, but had lost so much time, that when he rejoined he was 6 seconds a lap faster, so fast that he clocked the third fastest lap of the race. In hindsight he would have saved time by stopping on lap 1 with the pace he had shown, but it bodes well for the rest of the season. In 14th place was the first of the AM runners. Pronag had kept the Travis Perkins sponsored car out of trouble in the early laps, had a good mid race battle with Wambogini and just failed to join him in fighting the Honda for 12th. It was a good run for driver and team, who had expected the long straight to be an issue to the car, but like some others he had found handling to be the key here and flew around the middles section of the track. It will be interesting to see how he goes against the returning AM leader next week. Scarlet managed to take second in the class with 19th, just keeping herself out of the clutches of Penfold, who took 20th and with it second in the AM Class. This wasn’t likely to be the best circuit for the Alpine, but he could go very well next week at Le Mans. Finally in AM, Devilsboogyman finished 21st, the Honda Civic a massive tyre eater around here in FWD that left him struggling, although his fastest laps weren’t far from Scarlet and Penfold.
The final two, finishing 15th and 17th, were the very disappointed pair of AtomStew and CelticFox. Hoppers Sport R&D had high hopes for this race, with J47Tee due to start on row 2, but he never showed and last week’s runner up Atom Stew found the Mitsubishin far from home in Italy. The team had taken the aero off for straight-line speed, and with it the car looked a real handful and slow around the middle part of the circuit which cost him dear. For Celtic he just lacked pace, and becomes the first runners this season to get a Pi gain, which he will need judging on the speed of the Pontaic around a circuit he hoped to do well on.
So what a race, Bradderstig finds himself back on top, RangersRick performance to come second in a circuit that doesn’t suit AWD was highly impressive, and these two are certain to now be locked into a season long battle for the Championship. Posh Rob returns next week, and Nikemike and Kinky are in close quarters as well, the championship is close. To sum up the race, its best left to the driver of the day, and even that award was a close one after so many great drives, Bass summing it up with “The was F**king awesome”.
See you at Le Mans.

The cars charge into the first corner, Rick leading a number of AWD cars and Kinkycowboys.

Talking point: The brilliant battles through the field, some race long.

BMR Sutton did well to grab 3rd with the tail happy Nissan

Hopperswwfc, was a disappointed non starter.
