K-CLASS VAPES ROUND 3 - LONG BEACH
KINKY TURNS A CORNER ON THE BEACH
A delighted Kinkycowboys wins his first Thunder Enduro race ~ AtomStew a strong second ~ Mayhem on lap 1 mixes up the race ~ ABigPieKey strong in the second part of the race again ~ PoshRob extends his Championship lead with 4th ~ Badbeat wins AM again, but Penfold challenges him ~ Full gird of cars ~ 3 AM Drivers finish in the top 10, in the Citroen support race

Kinkycowboys stayed away from the walls and drove a perfect race to victory.
Long Beach is always a circuit that divides opinion, some detest the unforgiving walls, whilst others like the challenge and having a circuit on the calendar that is just a little bit different. The close nature in the Thunder Enduro paddock, had seen a flurry of banter doing the rounds since last week, with a lot going in the direction of the Cerberus drivers on row 2. Kinkycowboys has always been fast here, but has a history of snuggling up to the walls, and one corner in particular, and plus adding in a few contacts with teammates in the past, he and Bradderstig were getting a bit of stick. Championship leader Posh Rob was busy dividing opinion, many believing the Subaru BRZ would run away and hide, whilst others thought otherwise and in truth the stopwatches in pre race testing weren’t giving the impression of a second win on the bounce. The entry for the second season on the trot was full, and some of this was down to returning cars and new entries. We still only had one DMR Renault Alpine, and Penfold who was at loss for the cars poor pace in the first two rounds, was overjoyed and looking forward to the 35 laps ahead after a bit of engineering done to the car by the Cerberus boys and lead driver Bradderstig. SWR were again with one Subaru, as Scarlet Witch was busy on the other side of the pitwall. We had a returning Team Hard BMW, and also a second of the RML Honda S2000, with the return of Mad in the Tetley sponsored version. Long Beach also bought three new entries to the series, as Empire Motorsport had a pair of brand new Subaru S22, so new in fact that they were still in the factory colours. Also making an appearance was Pronag racing in an Audi S3, the driver having made his debut recently in the Touring Car Sunday.
The support race for the Citroen 2CV’s was to say the least eventful. New driver Pronag led early on until CQR Posh Rob came through to victory. Pronag held on to second, Badbeat an impressive 4th, with Devilsboogeyman 10th, it was a good race for the AM boys. The grid formed up for the main event, 35 laps of the street circuit lay ahead, and the front row pair of Posh Rob and BMR Sutton were keeping one eye on the tight left hander at the bottom of the straight, and another at those behind. 24 cars got away cleanly first time, well cleanly that was until they reached Holliday Bend for the first time. The front row pair both looked like they were trying to stay out of trouble, but that cautious approach worked for neither. Sutton went extremely wide and then locked the brakes, whilst Posh Rob found the Camaro of Kinky taking advantage of the caution and RangersRick also making his way through, as they turned into Holliday’s for the first time. Kinky was through and away, but the rest were not so lucky. Rick got it all wrong for the second time in three seasons, this causing the offline Sutton to hit the side of him, Posh Rob also being caught up in it all, the one driver threading his way through the carnage was AtomStew, who made it through in second from 16th on the grid! J47TEE and JRush looked for a second like they would to, but the Mitsubishi was spun and this caught out the GRT Integra as well delaying him. On the run down to the roundabout, it became 4 abreast, as a crumpled Sutton, Posh Rob, Basslinejunkio and CelticFox vied for position, but this was never going to work and the KRR Nissan was in the wars again, and on the top of the roundabout, joined by the sister car of ABigPieKey, the two blue Nissans covered in the floral display that usually sits on top of the roundabout. They weren’t the only ones, as JRush bad luck also continued and he was the second Integra to end up flying into the air. This had the group completely parked up, to the extent that at the end of lap 1 Kinkycowboys had a near 4 second lead on AtomStew and a 8 second lead over the third place car of Posh Rob. His Christmas’s had come early.

AtomStew drove well to take second place

It was a better day for Devil Lord pace wise, if not the result.
What was surprising was the lack of pit stops at the end of that first lap, obviously the battered BMR Sutton was in first in, but his teammate didn’t need to, although his woes were far from over on the first lap, as RGreenwood got it all wrong down the back straight and took them both down the escape road, the KRR driver glad it wasn’t a wall as the impact would have been race ending. RGreenwood then returned to the track with lit up wheels and smacked into the side of the debuting EmpireMSport. Not the best few seconds in his career for the Team Hard driver. Out front and Kinky was away and driving brilliantly, the gap to the Hoppers R&D car growing by over half a second a lap. Posh Rob was looking comfortable in third, chased by CelticFox. At first he was under pressure from Basslinejunkieo who fancied his chances here, but an error saw him pick up damage after a scary spin at over 140mph on the start straight and with it a stop that dropped him back through the field. Behind them and Devil Lord had had a superb opening lap and Nikemike was also in the mix but complaining of a lack of straight line speed once again, and not sure on last minute set up changes to the Mazda. Also up in the top 10 were Robraceruk, amazingly RangersRick and the top 3 in AM, as Penfold led Hoppers and Badbeat. For round 1 winner Bradderstig it was a complete disaster, as he was the most heavily damaged and crawled to the pits, rejoining a lap down and behind most of the field on track as well. It was going to be a painful day for the second Cerberus car.
The front three were busy eking out a gap to each other, the battle for fourth being the most entertaining, as Celtic, Mike and Devil Lord were hard at it. Devil was having a lot happier time in the Escort than he had last week and was looking like his old self, but he had to pit on lap 7 for a quick stop which dropped him back. The two GRT cars were now running next, Rick was carrying some damage and trying to hold the car together until his stop, where as it was all going wrong for teammate JRush who had a problem into Holliday’s again that left him needing to make an extra stop. This had left Robraceruk next up and slightly on his own for a bit, although his rival from last week Major Raver, was chasing him down. Raver had been stuck in the early laps behind the second RML Honda of Mad and had the same problem of last week that the V-Tech engine is miles faster on a straight. Once he was through he was soon able to get away the Alfa mega on the brakes and in the corners once again. AM was now being led by Badbeat, who was driving fantastically in the Lancia and in the top 15, but it wasn’t the dominance that we have seen in the class this season, as Penfold wasn’t far behind and was loving the new and improved Alpine. Pronag was running third in the class, the Audi handling well but it had even has less straight-line speed than the Alfa. For Devilsboogeyman, it was a difficult race in the front wheel drive Honda, the car locking up and struggling with a bit of front end understeer, but he was comfortably ahead of Hoppers in the Clio, who had slipped back after a promising first lap.
Most eyes were on the recovering runners, some showing strong pace. J47TEE had lost a lot of time with his extra stop but was now lapping at a good pace, but a lap down. BMR Sutton was having a terrible time, and lap 12 saw his second stop of what turned into a three stop race, where as team mate ABigPie was running pretty well and had got himself into the top 10, and once passed Robraceruk he set off after the battle between CelticFox and Nikemike. Kinky had this in the bag, Atomstew was aware from early on that the Cerberus car had the pace and he was playing the sensible game of bagging the points and also hoping for an error from the leader. Posh Rob had the same approach in third and was taking no chances, in the belief that he was clear from those behind, but unbeknown to them both, someone’s true pace was being masked. The battle between Celtic and Mike was still raging on and they had become a three with ABigPieKey now with them. Mike pitted first on lap 17 and Celtic a lap later, these two once again joined at the hip, but this worked a treat for the KRR Nissan which had plenty of torque around Long Beach and it allowed PieKey to stop a lap later and rejoin a head, and it took him no time to get away. All of a sudden we had a driver lapping at the same pace as the leader, and PieKey was now closing down the Subaru in third. On lap 28 he was right on the tail of the championship leader, and the Subaru had no answer down the main straight for the Nissan, the 370z through comfortably before turning into Holliday’s. Now could he catch the second place car? The gap was coming down, and so were the laps, that although he made up 12 seconds, he couldn’t make the final three and he had to settle for third place. The leader meanwhile was untroubled by all this, and was driving faultlessly, and Kinky crossed the line to win his first ever race. One joker in the paddock, said with a smile, one Cerberus car in the wall, the other driving a perfect race, had Bradderstig and Kinkycowboys swapped cars? When the winner arrived in the pitlane there was no doubt it was Kinky, the Michael Fish look alike, the smile and delight clear to see and to be fair the pitlane was overjoyed to see the popular racer break his duck and in style. For team mate Bradderstig it was a terrible day, stuff of nightmares. He hoped to not stop again, but needed a splash and dash that left him down in 17th at the end of the race.

First corner mayhem, as RangersRick hits the wall.

ABigPieKey flew through the field to take third in the Nissan.
Second for Atomstew was a great result for Hoppers R&D and also puts Stew in contention in class A, which up to now had been dominated by the GRT pair. Again though this was a tale of a split team garage, as for J47TEE was left a very disappointed 15th at the end, but his second fastest lap and AWD gives him massive hopes to lead into turn one next week at Mugello and hopefully avoid the first lap issues he has had this season. Posh Rob was very happy with 4th, and the Championship leader extending his lead in the process. Behind him though Celtic ended up a comfortable 5th as the battle between him and Mike was settled when a back marker got involved and this damaged the Mazda and left him unable to challenge. It was a good result for the pair, and keeps them both in the Championship scrap. Celtic also leaving Long Beach in the lead of the Support Series. 7th was a good recovery for RangersRick who with another lap might have beaten the Mazda, and his pace and straightline speed was once again very good, whilst teammate JRush was bitterly disappointed with his 12th place. So to 8th place, and here we go again, as Robraceruk and Major Raver were at it as usual. The Honda led the opening laps, but an error left the Alfa back on his tail, only for a spin to leave Raver facing the wrong way and losing 20 seconds and a place to the second Honda once again. Once Mad had pitted Raver was in clear air and running at the pace of the second and third place cars. Once all the stops had been done he had halved the gap to Robraceruk and for the next 15 laps slowly picked away that as they started the last lap they two rivals were line astern again. The long straight was the strength for the Honda and it allowed it to open a slight gap that was enough to keep Raver behind this time, even though the tyres on the PG Tips sponsored car, were crying enough. Such is the straightline speed of the Honda, that many tip it for a podium next week at Mugello. The usual games between the two teams continued in the pitlane, as the RML boys were quick to give a sign for two one to those at DART, well we think it was two and one!
The second Honda rounded out the top 10, a promising return to the series for Mad, and third in Class A. 11th was the disappointed Devil Lord. Devil had been in the battle with Celtic and NikeMike for much of the race, but the extra stop was a problem and left him 11th, which without it could have easily been 5th. He was at least happy that he and the car were far more competitive than they were last week at Road America. 13th and 14th were the pair of Northern Monkies Lancia’s, with Badbeat leading home his extra stopping teammate. Badbeat is driving fantastically and in the early laps he was in a good battle with Mad and Raver. For Bassline it was a missed opportunity, the Lancia was strong here and his recovery driver to 14th showed that. 16th and less than half a lap behind Badbeat, was Penfold. The DMR car was a joy for the driver at Long Beach and Penfold was buzzing after the race with the step forward he and the team had made. The battle between him and BadBeat at Mugello should be a great one.
18th was the first of the new boys, as Pronag drove a sensible clean race in the new Audi. Empire was next of the new runners in 21st, showing some pace in the car, the two extra pit stops ruining any chance of a top 15 finish, whilst teammate Maj was the only retirement, hitting the wall hard on lap 3, that left the engine to damaged to be able to carry on. 20th was RGreenwood who after his opening lap, struggled with the BMW, and the driver admitted afterwards that maybe he had gone the wrong way slightly on setup. 22nd was Hoppers, who found the race hard work, the Clio struggling for rear grip, and 23rd Devilsboogeyman who found FWD not the way to go around Long Beach and at least hopeful that Mugello will be a kinder circuit for the Fife Flyer.
So Kinky joins the list of winners and also puts himself in the title battle. Posh Rob has a nice lead in that, but news filtered through after the race that he won’t be present next week in Italy and with it, the championship becomes completely wide open. Don’t bet on a 4th different winner from the first 4 rounds. It’s turning into a great unpredictable championship already. Roll on Mugello.

The 2CV's proved to be hairy fun around the walls of Long Beach, Posh Rob beating Pronag for the victory.
