CQR Posh Rob and SWR scored their first ever Thunder Enduro wins, in style on Sunday.

A three week break had seemed longer to many, but it had given the teams a chance to get some testing and development work in over the Christmas break.  We were missing one of the RML Development Honda’s and SWR racing Subaru’s, plus no Team Hard BMW.  It was a welcome return to the series for Hoppers Sport J47TEE who was confident of a good result in the Mitsubishi Evo.  As for SWR, the lone Subaru for Posh Rob was many people’s tip for victory, the car expected to suit the Road America circuit which was making its debut on the calendar.  The day had started with the support series race for the Historic Prototype cars of the late 60s and early 70s.  The fantastic looking and sounding beasts were a spectacular sight, hard to tame but great fun to watch.  CelticFox led early on in a Lola T70, before Bradderstig got to the front of the pack in his McLaren M8.  It wasn’t all plain sailing though for the reigning Support Champion, as JRush95 was keeping him very honest in the unique Nissan R382.  Five different cars finished in the top 6.

Overhead the skies were rather grey, but no rain after the deluge of Silverstone, was thankfully expected to arrive, and the cars lined up with no issues, all 20 cars ready for the first red light of 2019.  The start straight at Road America is slightly narrower than some tracks and this gave the front row of Bradderstig and Posh Rob a chance to stop the two AWD GRT Integra’s of getting through on the run down to the first corner.  The lights flashed to green and it was an even launch for the front pair, but JRush95 was quickly on to them but only had the grass to use to try and get past, this losing him traction and dropping him back.  Bradderstig thinking this side was covered concentrated on Posh Rob, but he left a slight opening for third row starter RangersRick to overtake the pair and lead into the first corner.  At the back J47TEE made a lightning start himself, but then found a complete box of neutrals and by the time the Hoppers Sport car had corrected itself, he was over a minute behind the field.

Badbeat moped up in AM once again.

It was a tough return to the series for J47TEE.

Rick led through the first corner, passing the Chevrolet was massive in giving him a chance to get away, whilst Bradders and Posh Rob were side by side on the run down to turn two, before the Subaru was through.  Bradders rueing that both cars had got through so quickly.  Down the long middle straight the Chevrolet flexed its muscles and was back in front, but this was a short stay in second, as it wasn’t long before the SWR car was back leading the chase of the Integra.  This gave Rick a bit of a breathing space, but it wasn’t enough and he was soon under attack and Posh Rob was through on the run down to the back straight.  The Subaru was planted through these corners, but Rick wasn’t giving up, the little Acura quick in a straight-line.  They crossed the line for the first time with Rob in front, chased closely by Rick, third Bradderstig who was under a lot of pressure from the second GRT Acura of JRush and the Cerberus Escort of Devil Lord.  Sixth was CelticFox, who was having a lively dice with the breathless on the straight Mazda of Nikemike, the top 10 being rounded out by AtomStew, Basslinejunkio and BMR Sutton.

Posh Rob continued to lead out front; Rick wasn’t giving up the chase and was trying all he had to hang on.  For the first 5 laps he managed to keep the Subaru a couple of seconds ahead, but the Overall Class Champion soon realised this was a fight he could not win and set about making sure he looked after his tyres and kept pulling away from those behind.  Bradderstig was holding on to third and was keeping himself safe from those battling around him.  Devil Lord had started well, but soon found his brakes rather unpredictable, in fact they were locking up well in advance of the corner and losing him time, this started dropping him back.  AtomStew was another showing some early promise, but he also was having problems, a couple of offs through the fast kink on the back straight finally caused some damage and needed an extra stop.  Any hopes of all this leaving Bradders in peace were quickly extinguished, as BMR Sutton and Kinkycowboys were moving up through the field, and bringing Basslinejunkio with them.  The first two were able to get past the dice between Celtic and Mike, but Bass was jammed up behind the Mazda.  The KRR Nissan’s looked a real handful, Sutton is very much use to the handling quirks of the 370Z and was lapping as fast as all but the top 2, but his team mate, ABigPieKey was finding his a terrible version a real handful and maybe wishing that he had run the ex AWD version of RangersRick.  Piekey was involved in his own fantastic dice but stuck down in 12th.  He was with Robraceruk and Major Raver, these three swapping places for fun, the Nissan and Honda quicker on the straights, the little Alfa in the corners and braking.  Many times they were three abreast, and it became a four car battle as Devil lord fell in to the clutches of the three, this battle taking them up to their pit stops around half distance.

Out front and Posh Rob was in control, Rick deciding to pit on lap 11, Bradderstig next, and in fact most of the top 10 pitted around this time.  The only one not to was Nikemike, the wiley old fox knowing how important each point is, was hoping to grab a few bonus points for leading a lap, but such was the pace of the leader that when he stopped on lap 13, he was able to rejoin in front of the Mazda.  Rob’s lead once all had settled was at 10seconds, and except for one lap being slowed by a spinning backmarker in front, it was plain sailing for him, he extended his lead to over 22 seconds at the flag taking his first ever win.  It was pure delight in the SWR pit, and Rob had set himself up to be a real player in this season’s championship.  Rick was equally delighted with second, and a comfortable second at that.  He had built up enough of a lead in the first half of the race over the chasing pack to know second was his.  The battle for third could have gone about 4 different ways.  BMR Sutton and JRush battled, Bradderstig was always in and around it, and teammate Kinkycowboys was quick as well.  BMR Sutton though got in front and stayed there, but as was mentioned earlier, he was too far from Rick and unable to mount a challenge for second.  It was a good result and drive for KRR after a disappointing race at Silverstone.  Bradderstig managed to hold on to 4th, rueing the lost horsepower form the Pi ballast, but vital bonus points.  He managed to hold off JRush for 5th, who was slightly disappointed with the result.  What it does give us, is a fantastic battle shaping up between the two GRT cars in the Class Championship, with both joint top.  Kinkycowboys took 6th, and his third fastest lap puts him finally up the sharp end of the grid.  Both the first two rounds have left the Norfolk driver playing catch up, so he will be glad of being at the sharp end of the grid for a change.

Nikemike locks up challenging CelticFox.

These three all played their part in the battle of the race.

For reigning champion, NikemikeRules, 7th was a good result in a car that did not work around the Road America circuit.  Mike struggled for straight-line speed, and he was visibly ringing the neck out of the rotary engine car in the corners.  He kept those ahead honest, but unable to challenge.  Don’t be surprised to see him back in the podium hunt next week.  8th was ABigPieKey who was at a loss to understand his race.  He pitted on lap 10, the stop a long one due to a stuck wheelnut, but the car seemed happier on the new tyres and was looking far less tail happy.  The time lost saw him behind Robraceruk and Major Raver after their stops, but with the car now handling better and lapping two seconds a lap quicker, he soon passed the pair and made his way in to the top 10, in fact if he had the pace all race he may well have challenged for the top 5.    Basslinejunkio managed to take 9th, beating CelticFox late on.  The Lancia went well here and Bass was the first ProAm driver home, and was very happy after to the race with his and the cars performance, the Northern Monkey team confident of a win this season.  Celtic had a good run, but so close was the pace, that he was shuffled down to 10th place at the end.  It was a still good day for the Quicksilver team as he left Road America leading the Support Championship.

Behind him we had the battling Honda and Alfa.  Robraceruk and Major Raver spent the whole race battling each other, in fact there must have been nearly 50 overtakes between the pair.  The RML car is quick on a straightline, and lap after lap he would get past on the start straight, build a slight gap on the middle straight, to watch the Alfa come back at him through the later part of the lap.  On lap 17 Robraceruk made a mistake on the back kink and this gave Raver a 3 second breathing space, but the PG tit car wasn’t to be beaten and was back past as they started the second to last lap, only for Raver to retake and manage to build up enough of a gap through the twisty sections, to repel the Honda on the straights for the last lap.  It was a fantastic dice that both massively enjoyed.

13th was the first of the two Hoppers R&D Evo’s for AtomStew, the extra stop spoilt his hopes for a top 10 finish, and the driver was disappointed with the points lost after Silverstone.  Teammate J47TEE tried desperately to make up for the time lost on that opening lap, and followed home in 14th place, his pace good.  Both will be looking forward to Long Beach next week.  The final point’s finisher was Badbeat in 15th.  The second Lancia was again leading the way in AM, and the North East driver is getting further away from the other AM drivers and closer to  those ahead, in fact he managed to beat Devil Lord for that final point.  It was a horrible race for the Escort, after what looked like being a great day after lap 1.  17th was a a lonely Wambogini in the second DART Alfa, who just admitted he was out of practice and in need of some testing, whilst also lonely in 18th was the winner of the FWD class Devilsboogeyman.  This was a really promising race for the Fife Flyer, he was comfortably the second fastest in the AM class, and now has a couple of more front wheel drive friendly tracks ahead.  19th was Penfold who was disappointed with his pace in the Renault Alpine.  He was happy with the balance of the car through the corners but said he had no grunt on the straights.  And finally due to no retirements was Hoppers, in the Renault Clio.  Hoppers hadn’t tested the Clio since the Silverstone race, and he was 10 seconds off the pace, also the team decided to run with no aero for the straights, which made the car a massive handful in the corners for the driver.

So Posh Rob jumps to the top of the leaderboard as we head to Long Beach next week.  His fastest lap also gives him pole position, which knowing Long Beach maybe a bad thing with 20 plus cars rushing down to the first corner.  All of the top runners are now on lower Pi, the highest driver in the championship who isn’t will be ABigPieKey.  His team mate is a bit of a master around the American street circuit, as is the reigning champion who will for the first time not be one of the lowest two Pi drivers in the race.  Expect another fantastic battle.
