THUNDER ENDURO ROUND 10 - LIME ROCK
Raver withstands major pressure to rob Posh.
First win for Major Raver and DART ~ CQR Posh Rob boosts championship hopes with fighting drive to second ~ Maj2012 and Pronag impress again. Best drive of the season for Robraceruk ~ GRT/JDR Integra’s take class fight down to Suzuka ~ Tough race for Cerberus, but they take the team title ~ Some great battles through the field ~ Pronag holds off BMR Sutton to win the Clio Support race.

Major Raver withstood race long pressure from Posh Rob to win his first race.
Lime Rock had made one visit to the TORC events, the opening Classic WTCC and Modsports races in 2018, and the track gave us some great racing that day, and hopes were that it would do so again. The American circuit was bathed in glorious sunshine and a near full grid as well. Talk over the past week had mostly been on who was going where and doing what next Season, some already spending more time in new cars, having written off the old. Some though were still hard at work testing, especially the two at the top of the Championship, Bradderstig who knew he could clinch the title here, and CQR Posh Rob who knew he needed a great day for him and a bad one for his rival. It was going to be a hard task for the SWR driver, starting at the back of the grid with his teammate, the returning Scarlet Witch, on a track that isn’t the greatest to overtake at. Pre race testing showed the SWR pair to be fast, but impressive times had also been set by CelticFox in the Quicksilver Pontiac and the two DART Alfa’s.
The support race for the Clio’s was a fun affair, and it went to Pronag Racing, who managed to get a demon getaway from the 4th row of the grid and then lead by the end of lap 1. BMR Sutton worked hard to try and close him down, but run out of laps, whilst Champion elect Bradderstig was making his way through the field to 4th, after a visit on the grass, on lap 1.
ABigPieKey and CelticFox sat on the front row for the main event, but both had eyes on rows two and three, with the fast starting Pronag and Maj both looking to have the lead into turn one. Both didn’t disappoint as Pronag tuned in to turn 1 first, Maj slotting in-between the front row pair to outbrake them for second, Piekey holding off Celtic, RangersRick and Major Raver as they went through the esses. The first corner was a very clean affair, but sadly for Penfold the first lap wasn’t. One of the major stars at Indianapolis last week, was well up the grid, having qualified 8th, but going on to the back straight he got alongside the Integra of JRush, the hump on the hill catching the JDR driver out slightly and the two touched spinning the Renault Alpine, the ever unlucky Penfold hitting the tyre wall hard. The pack managed to avoid this, Pronag leading them across the line a second ahead of Maj, ABigPieKey in third, but Celtic threatening, RangersRick having the same behind from Major Raver, with the impressive pair of Mad and Badbeat on their tails. Celtic was keen to get after the front two and knew the Nissan was already rather lively and on the run down to the last corner on lap two, the Nissan run wide and Celtic was through to third. Raver was also on the back of the pair, having passed RangersRick in the esses. Rick was struggling with the Integra already, the low Pi and this not being the best track for AWD cars; he was soon under attack from behind. Pronag was now making a great escape out front and fellow rookie Maj was also pulling away from those behind, in fact over the first 7 laps, these pair were pulling away comfortable and they were in a class of their own. Behind them, Celtic was comfortable at first in third, but by lap 7 that had become fourth. Raver took 2 laps to find a way past the tail happy PieKey and homed in quickly on Celtic, but Celtic wasn’t in the mood for a fight with the little Alfa, and let him past to third. The Quicksilver driver said “I let him go; he was quicker, I could see by the speed he caught me, and I knew I could get a good result if I drove my own race, no point in wasting seconds in a fight I wouldn’t win”. Now we had Raver up to third, and he started to close the gap to the top 2, but not by much. He started lap 8, 3 seconds behind Maj, but the gap to the Subaru was only coming down by the odd tenths. Then on lap 11 it came down a whole lot more. Raver was lapping in the low 54s, but the front two’s pace was drifting out into the higher 54s. Pronag who was comfortable up top, was now looking like he was struggling, and so was Maj, were both the leaders in tyre trouble? On lap 12 Maj, went wide coming out of the esses and Raver was up to second, a lap later the Alfa dived inside the Audi at turn one to take the lead. Quickly the DART car escaped, lapping still in the very low 54’s, the other two nearly a second off now. By lap 17 Raver had taken the gap out to just over 5 seconds, but Pronag and Maj were under pressure from behind. The two had been caught by Posh Rob, who had been making his way through the field fantastically. The Subaru BRZ, like the Alfa’s, was far from the fastest cars on the straight, but could carry so much more speed through the corners, and Posh Rob was able to pick off cars that had been understeering wide. The DART pit crew were hoping that the battle between Pronag and Maj would slow the SWR car down, but Posh Rob was soon past the squabbling pair, in fact Maj, took advantage to pass the Horizon team car as well. Posh Rob now set off after Major Raver, but the pair were lapping equally, 6 seconds between them. Back markers around Lime Rock were always going to be a problem, and they fell in the first half of the race kindly for the leader. Major Raver stayed out longer than a lot of the pack, and jumped the lapped cars whilst they were pitting, for Posh Rob this wasn’t as great as they were starting to rejoin in the gap between the leading pair. Lap 27, and with the gap still at 6 second, Posh Rob lost time, as contact between the battling for position pair of BMR Sutton and RotaryRhys, caused the Subaru to go wide at the last corner, avoiding the walls, but costing him 2 seconds in his pursuit. The margins were so fine. Posh Rob was so keen to keep the pressure on Raver, who in the past had blown some decent results, was mistakes, that he believed he could force the Alfa driver into making an error here.

Penfold's luck was out again, as early as lap 1

Pronag and Maj2012 were never far apart.
Lap 35 and Raver came up to a gaggle of cars and pitted, two laps later the Subaru was in and rejoined in second, 6 seconds behind the leader. For the next 7 laps the gap stayed constant, in fact some were having a little look at the fighting pair of Maj and Pronag behind, as these two were closing slightly back in on the front pair. Again though, the fast half of the race was repeated, as the tyres from the front two got stronger, the Audi and Subaru 22b started to wear their front lefts harder and the pace dropped away again. Posh Rob could not close the gap, it remained constant but now Raver had a large bunch of back markers, all fighting for position in the race. Being the first car to lap cars ahead can be hard, and here it was, as Raver was struggling to get through, in fact he was having the door slammed on him, the drivers he was attempting to pass believing it was for position. By the time Raver had cleared the main group and Posh Rob as well, the gap was now down to 3 seconds, the Subaru driver and SWR pitwall were sensing victory. Over the last 5 laps, Posh Rob tried everything to get back on terms, but Raver wasn’t cracking and 2 laps from home set his fastest lap of the race. The delighted DART team celebrated loudly on the pit wall, the driver over the moon with a result that vindicated the team’s decision to run the Alfa 4c this season. For Posh Rob he was equally happy, he hadn’t expected to get a podium after qualifying, but the result was a massive fillip for his Championship hopes. These hopes were raised further with the performance of the Cerberus Chevrolet Camaro. Bradderstig managed to salvage 11th place at the end of the race, the low Pi a real killer for the car, but as usual he drove superbly, involved in a lot of midfield scraps to bring home valuable points and give him a slight championship lead going into Suzuka next week.
All the way to the end, Pronag and Maj were at it, the pair maybe short of grip in those closing laps, but they were close together, the Horizon Audi just missing out on its first ever podium. Both were pleased with the results, and the battle the pair had had. 5th place was a bit of a shock and another car desperately struggling for tyres at the end. It has been by his own admission, a terrible season for Robraceruk, after all the promise of Season 2. The RML Honda is a rocket ship on the straights, but struggles on fast corners, and eats tyres. This didn’t leave him hopeful coming to Lime Rock. It was a good race for the Honda driver though, as he slowly moved through the field and took advantage of some clean air in the pitstops. All this left him with 5th place with ten laps to go, but the tyres were going off and the car was a struggle. This saw him being caught by the second DART Alfa, as Wambogini was looking to finish his season off with a flourish. Wambo has had some really strong results of late, and this was another one. He was left rueing the early laps that had seen a couple of offs and left him near the back of the field, but he was now flying and catching and overtaking the cars ahead, lapping at the same pace as the two leaders. On lap 53 he took over a second out of the Honda, and with it set the fastest lap of the race, and sensed 5th place might be his for the taking. Robracer had backmarkers ahead, and this was more difficult for him as the car didn’t want to turn right in the faster corners, leaving him worried about contact when cars left him the inside to let him past. This all nearly ended in disaster on the last lap, but Wambo had back markers of his own, and Robracer was able to hold on for a very impressive result. “It makes up for Maple Valley, we deserved a similar result there, but the car broke”, said the PG Tips sponsored racer. “I wouldn’t have been able to hold on for another lap, so I was so pleased to see the flag”. Wambo was overjoyed with the fastest lap and 6th place, which capped a fantastic day for the DART team.

Cerberus clinched the Team title, with 7th for Kinkycowboys

Posh Rob charged through the field to finish second.
7th place fell to JRush, which was the result he needed. It now puts the JDR driver in the lead of Class A, and gives him a chance to take the trophy next week in Japan. It was the best he could get out of the car, the circuit not friendly to low Pi AWD cars, but he has high hopes for a strong result at a friendlier track for the finale. 8th and 9th was the battling pair of Kinkycowboys and BMR Sutton. These two have spent the American leg of the second half of the season in close quarters, and they did through the race here. For Kinky it was a good race at a circuit he wasn’t sure would suit, whilst BMR Sutton struggled early on but found some really strong pace in the second half of the race. Unlike his teammate, and last week’s winner ABigPieKey, who finished down in 15th, the Nissan looking an evil car around the fast corners, and he admitted afterwards he had one envious eye on the sure footed DART cars, that of course he races in next season. CelticFox finished tenth, the Quicksilver driver a little disappointed to have fallen down the order as much as he had, his last couple of laps battle with BMR Sutton though, had entertained the crowd royally. 11th on track was RotaryRhys, but he dropped to 12th with a 5seond penalty. The new guy to the series, had a tough debut at Virginia, and didn’t prove popular with some of the grid, for some over aggressive driving, but it was a massive step up in Lime Rock. He was hit with a penalty for contact on lap 2 that sent Devil Lord wide, locked brakes on the BMW driver pushing the Escort off and gaining a place, but his battle with Bradderstig late on was good, and praised by the championship leader. He is showing some really decent pace, and with some consistency is a real threat to the top 10.
13th was a great battle between a disappointed Mad, and Badbeat. Mad was strong in the early laps, but found that AWD was not the drivetrain to have here and soon dropped outside the top 10, for Badbeat it was yet another impressive performance from the Northern Monkies driver, who has now found himself in the midfield pack regularly. He was also beaming with the news that he has his hands on the rather beautiful looking KRR built Nissan NSX for next season. Empire ended up 16th, a difficult race for the second Subaru 22b. Earlier contact saw him in the wall and having to play a bit of catch-up, the lower Pi also a bit of a struggle for him, but the team boss was overjoyed with another podium for his team. Rick followed home in 17th, the car having no pace, and he can’t wait to get back to 725Pi next week and charge through the field is likely. Rick can also regain his class titles if results go his way. Devil Lord was 18th, and struggled with the Escort greatly, which is now past its devolvement life. Scarlet Witch was 19th, a couple of tangles spoiling her chances of a points finish, but it was valuable mileage for her, and she has already admitted she is gunning for Badbeat in the AM class next season. The last finisher was Hoppers, who showed his best pace of the season, but a roll at the last corner late on left him 5 laps down. We had two non finishers, Penfold who sadly never recovered from lap 1, and retired his Renault, whilst Devilsboogeyman showed better pace in the Honda early on, but his front tyres were rooted quickest of all, and instead of getting in others way at this short circuit, he made the sporting decision to pull off and retire.
So a great win for Raver and DART, who delivered a box of special pink Alfa t-shirts to the RML team after the race. Whilst the fun went into the night at one end of the pit lane, the crews at SWR, Cerberus and GRT/JDR were working hard on the best ways to win the titles next week in Japan.

RangersRick returned and made his way through the field.

Pronag made a lightning start to lead the Clio's into the first corner. He was never headed.
