K-CLASS VAPES ROUND 1 - SILVERSTONE
Bradderstig breaks his duck.
Bradderstig finally wins even with an extra pit stop ~ Nikmikerules takes second on the last lap ~ CQR Posh Rob on the podium in SWR Debut ~ Good debut for the Acura Integra’s ~ Badbeat wins the AM Class ~ Heavy rain makes it hard work for some ~ Some great close battles through the field ~ Nikemike wins the Support race for Touring Cars.

Bradderstig was beaten off the line, but he wasn't to be denied his first Thunder Enduro win.
The preseason break was as hectic as usual with testing and car changes, but it was amazing that we rolled up to Silverstone for Round 1 and most were caught on the hop with the British weather and had done very little wet running. When I say wet, I mean lashing it down wet, puddles everywhere, Silverstone famous down the years for its wet opening rounds of races. 24 drivers were in the paddock, two new entries for Millyzwhites and EmpireMSport, but neither driver unpacked their cars and we didn’t get to see them take part. The support race was for the new TORC Touring Cars and won comfortably by the reigning Thunder Enduro Champion Nikemikerules in a BMW 1M.
The cars lined up for the main race and the Alfa 4c of Wambogini stalled as the lights were about to turn to green, water in the electrics of the little Italian sportscar which left the field needing another formation lap and to try again. This time we were away and Bradderstig on pole was trying to make the new Camaro as wide as possible to defend the row two blitz from the AWD Integra pair of RangersRick and Nitrorushmini. It was in vain as the two GRT cars headed in to the first corner in front, Rick though going slightly wide and finding his teammate and Bradders sliding past. Bradders was keen to get in front and make his escape, especially with his main rival Nikemike back in the pack, and out of Farm Curve he dived down the inside to take the lead. Down the Hanger straight and he was already starting to pull away, Nitro just in front of his teammate as these two had a slight breathing space over CelticFox who had taken advantage of Posh Rob having to fend off the fast starting Mad in the Honda. Bradders crossed the line in first from Nitro, but through Abbey we had a change for second as the two GRT cars swapped positions, only for Nitro to repass Rick further around the lap. Celtic was still in fourth but under pressure from Posh Rob who had now passed the Honda and making up for his difficult first lap, also passing the Honda of Mad was the Mazda of Nikemike who had taken his time on the early laps. The midfield battle was intense, both Penfold and Devilsbogeyman running just outside the top 10, although for the latter it all went wrong on lap 2 when in the loop RGreenwood missed his breaking and hit the Honda Civic hard. This left the Fife Flyer with a lot of damage and a difficult race, with the FWD a real struggle in the conditions.

The reigning champion battled hard for second place.

The KRR Nissan's entertained with some great slides
Out front and Bradderstig was pulling away from Nitro who was slowly getting away from his teammate who now had his mirrors full of Posh Rob and Mike. For four laps the Integra held them off, before an error at the bottom of the Hanger straight released the pair, after Rick’s teammate. Behind them in 6th was still CelticFox, driving fantastically in the Pontaic, which was not expected to suit the conditions, 7th was the impressive Mad, 8th his teammate Robraceruk who was under a lot of pressure from ABigPieKey and AtomStew. These in the top 10 had dropped the group behind who were having a fantastic scrap. BMR Sutton took 6 laps to get up to 11th from his back of the grid spot, and he was bringing Devil lord with him, who was gaining in confidence with the new brakes in the Escort. Major Raver was next up in the Alfa, ahead of the two Northern Monkeys of Badbeat and Basslinejunkieo, Badbeat driving impressively in the AWD version. Also in this mix was Kinkycowboys, who was finding the second Cerberus Camaro a real handful, but keeping it ahead of Wambogini who was driving the new Alfa 4c for the first time. Whilst Badbeat led AM, the battle for second in class was lively. Scarlet Witch was showing some good pace in the second Subaru, but also finding the wall on the entry to the Hanger Straight, which had allowed Penfold to run second in class in the new Renault Alpine. This was another car unsorted, but it looked very good in the faster corners and Penfold was getting quicker each lap. 4th in class with Devilsbogeymans having problems was Hoppers, who was finding the little Clio a real handful in the wet conditions.
Nitro was under pressure from Posh Rob and Mike, and on lap 12 that pressure caught him out and sent him off track and let the Subaru and Mazda through. Nitro was the first pitter of the leaders, and Posh Rob became the next 7 laps later, rejoining ahead of Nitro. Mike stayed out and was dismayed to see Bradders stop on lap 21 and rejoin still in the lead, showing the dominance of the Camaro. 4 Laps later though Mike was given a small hope. Major Raver had been running reasonable well and around the top 10, making his stop on lap 25, he rejoined but completely misjudged the right hander on to the Hanger Straight on cold tyres and hit the tyre wall bouncing him in the path of the leader. The Camaro hit the Alfa side on hard and the damage had them both heading to the pits. Surely Bradderstig wouldn’t be denied again? This gave Mike a lap in the lead before making his stop, but when they all rejoined Bradderstig was in front by 4 seconds and Mike was back in a battle with the Subaru of Posh Rob. Bradders used the American power to pull away, and he was not going to be denied, as he romped home to win by 13seconds and finally breaking the jinx. The battle for second was far from over and Mike and Rob were hard at it for the last 10 laps and going into the last lap the Subaru held the advantage, Nitrorushmini keeping a close eye and hoping to take advantage. Through Abbey though Posh Rob got it slightly wrong, the lights on the dashboard of the car cut out, this distracted him and he hit a puddle and slide wide and in a flash the Mazda was through and Mike wasn’t about to give up the gift and held on to grab second place. Posh Rob was bitterly disappointed, he believed in the dry he had the pace to win, and that last lap light failure had been enough to cost him second, although he had enjoyed the battle with the reigning champion.
Behind these were the two GRT boys, Nitro wasn’t far from the podium and in fact in the later laps as they battled, he started to home in and only just missed out on beating Posh Rob on the last lap. The new team were overjoyed and also job done in the Class A points which was the aim for them at the start of the season. Rick was 5th and let slip after the race that the two cars had run different engine specs and the information to the team was invaluable going forward. 6th place twenty seconds behind Rick was the Quicksilver Pontiac of CelticFox. Celtic had driven brilliantly in the big car throughout and had enough to hold off the challenge for the last 13 laps of the first of the KRR Nissan’s of ABigPieKey. The Nissan still looks a wild car, it was very quick on torque out the slow corners, but BigPieKey and Sutton entertained with some very lurid slides. Sutton backed his team mate up with 9th place, which was a good result from the lowly grid slot and with how competitive the field was. He was happy with the performance and pointed out that it was the most points he had ever got in an opening round. Just beating Sutton was the sole Cerberus Ford Escort of Devil Lord. These two had been in close company all race, Devil had driven superbly through the field and left Silverstone very positive for the season ahead. Rounding out the top 10 was Mad in the first RML Development Honda. All last season he played second fiddle to his teammate, but he used the AWD to great effect and had the upper hand all race, starting the season off on a positive note. His teammate was 12th, running in the top 10 early on a few errors left him a little further back but pleased with the cars debut. Sandwiching them was AtomStew in 11th, the Mitsubishi had been as high as 6th at one stage but it was good points for the team and promising much for the season ahead, especially when the second car appears for round 2.

The new GRT/JDR Integra's dominated Class A

Badbeat won AM, Devil Lord impressed as he drove through the field.
13th fell to Basslinejunkieo who had a promising debut in the Lancia. His early race was hampered by a loss of power, Bass feeling the car was losing something on the straights, but a pit stop had found grass in the radiator and once cleaned out the car showed some great pace in the second half of the race. His teammate came home 15th and was overjoyed with the cars performance and also the win in AM. It was a lonely race for Badbeat, but he made no errors and scored points in the drivers’ Championship with a big field as well, which promises well for the season ahead. Between these was the second Camaro of Kinkycowboys. Unlike the winner, Kinky had a struggle all day and was never in contention, and you were left wondering if he wished he was in the second Escort with the pace of his ex teammate. 16th and 17th were the two DART Alfa’s. The team knew this would be a difficult race for the car; Raver’s hopes of getting in the top 10 were ruined by his error into the wall, whilst Wambogini used the race as a test session and was matching his teammates pace in the last quarter of the race. With Badbeat running away with the AM win, the battle for second was only decided late in the race. Scarlet and Penfold swapped the position a few times in the race, in fact the SWR Subaru had the upper hand on pace, but Penfold drove a wily race and managed to lead his female rival to 18th place and second in the class. Both cars showed lots of potential and will be closer to Badbeat for round 2. 20th and the final classified runner was Hoppers in the Clio. The short wheelbase really hampered the Hoppers Sport car in the wet, but the driver was pleased with the time in the car. RGreenwood after his earlier contact showed a bit of promise after his stop before the engine died on lap 8 and left him as a retirement, and Devilsbogeyman bravely tried to make it to the end, the Honda Civic a real handful in the conditions with all the damage.
So the champagne finally poured for Bradderstig and all in the pitlane were pleased to see him finally win. It was a dominant win, but the cars are so much closer this season and the Pi drops now start and that dominance will be very hard to repeat when we return in the New Year at Road America. Posh Rob and Nikemike will be keen to beat him next time out, but many others have shown they will be hoping for wins and dry weather in Season 3.

RGreenwood misjudged the corner, making contact with the Honda of Devilsbogeyman.
