THUNDER MAG - 11th APRIL 2019
Kidders Last Lap Gas
Kidders takes victory on the last lap ~ Devil Lord leads and runs out of fuel ~ Bradderstig returns to the championship lead with second ~ Horror race for pre race favourite PMR Plato ~ Penfold impressive AM and Class A win ~ Badbeat stars in the support race ~ TORC Touring Cars start this Sunday.

All were well behaved on the run down to Holliday's for the first time.
Latest News
After last weeks news of Nikemikerules retiring the second seat at SWR has been causing some interest. The car was seen testing over the weekend, and it is believed that the team is trying to secure an entry for Class A Champion JRush95.
The TORC Touring cars are starting to get ready for the start of the season this Sunday, with a few late entries. It looks like Kenty has secured a late deal to run an Hyundai Veloster, leaving three of the Korean cars on the grid for the season, with the two car effort from DSR for Sealey and Gizzard. Meanwhile its proving a frustrating time for KRR Racing, who are struggling to secure a car, and are in dispute with Ford UK, who have given their backing to RML for all 3 cars .
The Iconic Audi Quattro entered the Thunder Enduro on Tuesday, as AV Motorsport entered a car for TORC Touring Car Racer, Xray Energy. Surprisingly, the car was in RWD trim and not the iconic AWD that it was famous for, but it turned a few heads with its speed and performance at Long Beach.
The support race for the Thunder Enduro was changed at the last minute on Tuesday. The new Trans AM cars were not ready, and were replaced with the 80s Hot Hatch Heaven. The Trans AM cars will appear later in the season, and series organisers are confident they will be a great addition to the series calendar.
Gossip
Next seasons rules are already the talk of the paddock. Will Pi's go up or will they go down? One rumour was that they will stay the same for the first time, with only a slight tinkering. Another one being that the Support Series will be the same cars each week, instead of the something different at each venue.
It hasn't been the start that maybe EmpireMSport have been hoping for, and rumours have them already looking to leave BMW at the end of the season. Hoppers who has been leasing a car from the team this season, is beleived to be keen to keep the deal together for next season.
Penfold's strong start to the season has seen him being courted by other teams. With a rumoured change in the points for teams next time round, to include AM runners in a third car, the performance of both Penfold and Badbeat, has caught the eye of a number of teams in the paddock..
DART to not run the Alfa next season? Rumours are rife they have signed a deal elsewhere, and that the fantastic little 4c has been sold to RML for Season 5.
A Thunder Enduro Calendar? Sounds like a great idea, until you hear it isn't the cars but the drivers in minimal team clothing. I bet all the bored housewives out there can't wait to pre-order a copy.
Thunder Enduro
Long Beach is always a difficult circuit, a track that punishes mistakes with a thump to the wall. The support race for the Hot Hatch Heaven proved that, as bits of Honda's, Renaults and Fords littered the American street circuit by the time the 7 laps had finished. Badbeat drove an inspired race early on in his Ford Fiesta, but J47TEE was flying in a similar version of the small Ford car, and took the lead 2 laps from home to win. For Badbeat second was still a fantastic result and the Championship lead overall as well. Devil Lord took the final step on the podium and Pro honours in his Renault 5, whilst ProAM went to Rhys who finished 4th in the Honda Civic.
A full grid lined up for the main event, including a new car in the shape of the AV Motorsport Audi Quattro. As the lights tuned green the cars headed down to Holliday's for the first time, most taking things carefully, it looked like either JT or Posh Rob to lead them through, but the slightest touch left both on the marbles and the Honda of PMR Sutton in the lead. The Championship leader was taking it easy on lap 1 and being shuffled back, and JT was also slightly in the wars through the opening few turns. Bradders was up to second, with the second KRR Honda swarming all over the back of him, Rhys up to 5th, taking advantage of others being overcautious. It looked early on that the two KRR Honda's were up for a repeat of Barcelona, but it became obvious quickly that, that couldn't be further from the truth as Bradders dived through into the lead at Coleman's on lap 3, and Rick was now back in 6th place. Out front and Bradders was building up a lead, but that lead started to only come down once Devil Lord had got the Camaro up to second. Devil stopped earlier than the Mazda and used the clear air to jump the little Japanese car after the stops. It wasn't just a two horse race though, as Kidders was flying in the Alfa, and his progress only being slowed by the difficult to pass nature of the track. Going into the last lap, and Devil was comfortable in the lead, but then the Camaro stuttered, the engine sounding very off, and then off completely as it cut out, had the car run out of fuel? It seemed it had, and the Camaro freewheeled for half the lap before coming to a stop on the back straight under the tunnel, heartbreak for the driver. Kidders couldn't believe his luck and celebrated a great drive through the field for his first victory in his new team. "I struggled with the balance at the rear end when I first tested the car, but we've worked hard and it was brilliant around here, I couldn't believe how fast we were", stated the surprised winner at the end of the race. For Bradders second was a fantastic drive, and puts him back at the top of the Championship table, whilst J47TEE recovered to third in the TOS Lancia.
Posh Rob ended up down in 8th, the Subaru not at its best here, but the driver happy with how he performed, ahead of him were a few different names. The new Audi went really well on its debut for Xray and he took 6th place, whilst Rhys drove an inspired race to grab 4th. WeeBilly is always a fast driver, but the Honda 2005 car isn't the best at Long Beach, and he drove well to take 5th having started last on the grid.
In AM, and Penfold drove a fantastic race, leading the class on lap 1, he was always inside the top 15 all race and dominated not only this class but the Class A for AWD cars. Team boss Rob Morrall was keen to state how very impressed they were with in his performance at the end of the race. Mad made it a Class A 1-2 for the RML Ferrari's, which spolit Empires perfect start of the season, as he was left back in third place.
So we head to a very different circuit now of Silverstone, where walls are not a problem, run off areas a plenty. A lot of cars that should go well in Northampton have a high Pi as well, so don't write off seeing our fourth different winner in 4 rounds.
Teams & Drivers:
AV Motorsport: Xray Energy 6th
New entry to the series, running a 1983 Audi Quattro in RWD trim. Car was quick off the line, with strong accerlation, which suited the Long Beach circuit. Xray patientally moved through the field from a low grid slot and was rewarded with a top 6 finish on his debut.
BTC Honda Civic: AtomStew DNF
The electrical issues that have blighted the team since Media Day, are still present. Stew looked quick early on and a possible Class A winner, but then the car started cutting out and he headed into retirement. Needs to fix the problem before his class hopes vanish.
Cerberus Chevrolet Camaro 02: Devil Lord – 16th, Kinkycowboys DNE
Only one of the Championship winning Camaro's were present, last years winner Kinky missing for personal reasons. Devil Lord is really starting to come to terms with the the Camaro, and the car showed the pace that made it a winner here last season. A few problems early on left him with tyres going off and needing to pit early, as it was obvious the car had pace. A good battle out front with Bradders, he then had the lead after all the pitstops shaked out and looked set to win his second Thunder Enduro race, until the car run out of fuel starting the last lap. He finished 16th at the end, which was poor reward for a great drive. Fastest Lap will leave him on Pole at Silverstone.
Cerberus R&D Mazda MX5: Bradderstig 2nd
The reigning champion wasn't full of hope going into the race, the team worried about the power out of the corners and the long straight. The car was reworked to give it more grunt at the expense of weight, and Bradders drove superbly to be in the hunt for victory all race. leading early on, he could resist the charging Devil Lord, and then was beaten via the stops by the charging Kidders. Took second with the last lap drama, and with it the championship lead.
DARE Alfa 4c: Wambogini 14th
Wambogini had been putting in the testing, and had the car at the right build, so was looking forward to the race. Quick early on, until he crashed at Holliday's, his race became a two stopper. 14th seems to be his favourite finishing position, but he is getting closer to the pace of the sister cars, and could be a dark horse for a top 10 at Silverstone.
DART Alfa 4c: xKidders 1st, Major Raver 11th
Brilliant win for Kidders, who had shown superb testing pace which left the team confident of a good result. Took his time coming through from a low starting position, avoided problems and was one of the quickest in clean air, this allowing him to pass Bradderstig. Was equally matched with Devil lord over the last 10 laps, and admitted he was very happy with second until the Cerberus car run dry. No doubt he is in the Championship fight on this form. Another difficult race for his teammate, who picked up damage when Wambogini crashed in front of him. Stayed out for a few laps to one stop and then showed some good pace, but had a lot of cars to pass. May have got in the top 10, until a lapped runner took him out at Coleman's damaging the car. Held off Maj on the last lap for 11th. KIDDERS DRIVER OF THE DAY.
DMB34 BMW M2: Devilsboogeyman 21st
Devilsboogeyman was pleased to get through the first lap unscathed after the first two rounds. Didn't have the pace of his AM rivals, but picked up valuable points and mileage, and we now head to circuits that might suit the BMW M2 well.

Kidders took advantage of Devil Lord misfortune to take victory.

Bradders and Plato faught for the lead early on.
EmpireMSport BMW M3: Maj 12th, Empire 18th
The return of Maj was good news to the team, but the BMW's struggled a bit here. The low grid position left him playing catch up, as did damage he received early on, but then showed great pace to get up to 12th place. Chased Raver hard and with another lap would have passed the ailing Alfa. For Empire it was a difficult race, the car suffering a steering issue that caused it to snap right at Holliday's and in to the wall. Will be pleased to have left Long Beach with his Class A lead intact.
Hooligan Racing Mazda RX7: RotaryRhys 4th
A lot of drivers had real concerns about Rhys at Long Beach, but he silenced his critics in the best possible way with a quick clean drive. Took advantage of a number of drivers being careful on lap one to make up 8 places, and then showed a lot of pace to stay in the hunt for the top 5. Testing and setup work by Bradders made the car more drivable, and it showed as Rhys missed the podium by only 4 seconds. It was a very good day for the driver and team.
Hoppers Sport BMW M3: Hopperswwfc 19th
19th may not seem like a great result but Hoppers is getting closer and closer to the pace, and left Long Beach as the third fastest AM runner. He and the team have been hard at work testing and it is paying off, the driver over the moon to be within a second of the class fastest lap. Keeps this form up, he will be challenging for an AM victory.
Horizon with Scruffs Chevrolet Camaro 16: Pronag 7th
The big Camaro was heavy on brakes, tyres and fuel, which showed how good a job Pronag did to finish 7th place. Another driver to stay out of trouble, it paid off with a really sensible drive and he came out top in a good dice with Posh Rob and Celtic. The team are confident of their first podium on more friendly tracks ahead, and on this form who can blame them.
KRR Racing Honda NSX 02: RangersRick 9th, PMR Plato 20th
The stars of Barcelona came crashing down in Long Beach. Plato led early on, but then seemed to go backwards, sideways or anyway as the Honda struggled greatly, and his 20th place was a disaster for his championship hopes. Rick was in the top 3 early on, but the pace wasn't there and he slipped back to 11th, which became 9th with the last lap problems for others. Silverstone will bring a lot better for the team.
Monster JamSport Honda NSX 2005: WeeBilly 5th
The 2005 Honda was a horrible car around Long Beach in Season 1, and WeeBilly did a fantastic job to wrestle it up to 5th from the back of the grid. Took his time moving through, the car not the quickest, as it prefers faster flowing circuits. It was still a good result and amazingly having missed a round, he is not out of the title fight.
Quicksilver Lamborghini Countach: CelticFox 10th
The big wide Lamborghini was not expected to be a quick car at Long Beach, but Celtic drove fantastically just out side the top 6. Had a few good scraps with the SWR Subaru, his hopes started to unravel when the car started to fall apart. Noticed his back wing missing, when it fell off on its own, this didn't help his rear grip, and a big off on the last lap saw him lose places and fall to 10th place.
RML Ferrari 355: Mad 15th, Robraceruk 22nd
The team had high hopes going to America, Mad quick in the past here, and with AWD he was a bit of a dark horse, whilst Robraceruk had gone well in testing. It turned into a disaster, as both drivers were beaten by the Development team. Mad needed two stops, but was very pleased to finish second in Class A, whilst the same amount of pit visits accounted for Robraceruk. Went off in a big way at Coleman's, when Major Raver waved at him when he was being lapped, which meant he finished last of the runners. Has a big Pi for Silverstone, and is a dark horse for victory.
RML Development Ferrari 355: Penfold 13th
Wow, what a race for the third RML Ferrari. Looked the fastest of the three Ferrari's all race, and his fastest lap supported that. Kept out of trouble and dominated both Class A and the AM class. One place short of his best ever Thunder result, their was no doubting this was his best drive ever and a top 10 result isn't far away.
SMEG Racing Honda NSX 02: Badbeat 17th
Badbeat had a difficult race at Long Beach, and was pleased to leave still leading the class Championship. Was very slow on lap one, and fell to the back of the field, he needed two stops which lost him valuable time. Was brilliant in the support race, leading for a long time and finishing second to JT at the end. The Honda will be quick at Silverstone.
SWR Subaru BRZ: CQR Posh Rob 8th
He made it clear before race day, that this race was damage limitation for the team, as it wasn't the best circuit for the Subaru. Tried hard to keep out of trouble and did so with an 8th place, not to disappointed and didn't lose to many points in the championship to Bradders. Mission accomplished.
SWR with Prostate Cancer Subaru BRZ: Scarlet Witch DNE
Did not enter.
Team Hard Porsche Cayman: RGreenwood DNF
The Porsche Cayman returned to the series but it was a difficult one. Went well early on, but then suffered damage and had to pit early, another pit later then left him at the back. He then hit another car when being lapped by them. Ended up retiring soon after this, and most likely hoping that it was Silverstone he was racing at, and Long Beach being the race he was missing.
TOS Lancia 037: J47TEE 3rd
Bit of a dark horse for victory, but he didn't quite have the pace of those a head. It was a very good result and another podium for the Lancia though, and JT is a real championship contender. Took overall victory in the support race, fighting through the field, and looks capable of being the person to defeat Bradders in that championship for the first time.

Penfold drove a superb race to win both his classes.

AV Motorsport made a strong debut with 6th for XRay Energy.
Touring Car Sunday - Media Night
TORC Tourning Cars - Media Night
Sunday night sees the start of the new Touring Car season, as the teams rock up at Silverstone for Round 1 of the TORC Touring Cars. It is possible we may see a full grid of 24 cars and 10 different manufactures. Last season's Champion, Bradderstig heads the entry and is once again in the three car Cerberus team, driving the new Subaru Legacy. The team have high hopes that this car will prove to be faster and their Season 1 winning BMW 1M. The driving strength is completed by Kinkycowboys and Devil Lord, who will be favourites to lift the Pro call honours. Last seasons BMW's have gone to new homes, as DBM34 have the works BMW GB entry, and Pronag and PNR run an independent version. Rumours have KRR running the third version for PMR Sutton.
Ford have 6 cars on the grid this season, with the Ford UK RML run team of Robraceruk, Mad and Penfold. Rob was a star in the ProAM class last season, and is the title holder, and Penfold is a favourite to be up at the front in AM. The Ford Motorsport SWR run 2017 Focus will be fast, as the three from last year, Posh Rob, Xray Energy and Scarlet Witch return to the Championship. They will be gunning for Manufacture, Team and Drivers honours this season.
A lot of money has gone to SleazyBet, backing the SleazyBet sponsored DART VW Golf's for Team honours. The Thunder Enduro pairing of Kidders and Major Raver stay on board, and are joined by Pro star RangersRick who has bought Liqui Moly Sponsorship to the team. The Golf proved fast in Raver's hands last season and the two Pro runners will certainly be a thorn in Bradders side this season.
A massive thorn in the reigning Champions side, will come from the Honda Civic of J47TEE. TOS had the car flying last season, including victory in the America's cup at Road Atlanta, and if he does a full season he will be hard to beat. Hoppers Sport join the series running an Alfa, for Hoppers, whilst Hooligan Racing have the works Mercedes deal to run RotaryRhys who will go well if he cuts out the accidents that blighted him last season.
Last season Hyundai dipped a toe in the water, with a couple of rounds for the DSR run Veloster for Sealey. The car showed some fantastic pace, and thus Hyundai have entered the series giving full works backing to DSR to run a two car effort. Gizzard joins Sealey and this makes for a strong partnership, both drivers are dark horses in the ProAM and Pro class this season. A third Hyundai is entered for West Country racing, and Hyundai legend, Kenty, and if he raises the budget he will fly. Last of the manufacture teams going to press, is the debut for Mitsubishi who are supporting Maj and Empire. The team have a third car available, and are confident of showing better pace than the Vauxhall they struggled with last season. The team were stars in the Classic WTCC Series, so they are no slouch when it comes to Touring Cars.
So that's the confirmed entries, rumours of another Honda and a Renault effort could see a packed grid on Sunday, and lets not forget the Beetle cup that supports the series either, which promises to be fun entertainment.
Bradders is the favourite to defend his crown, but I have a feeling he will be made to work very hard for it. Roll on Silverstone on Sunday.

The Fiesta's finally ruled in the Hot Hatch Heaven race.

PNR will run a BMW 1M for Pronag.
