Latest News

The organisers of the series have confirmed they are hoping to announce a new structure in the next 2 weeks for the running of both series.  Also included in this will be the rules for Season 5, which are rumoured to have a new class structure called Thundersaloons and ThunderSports replacing the current drivetrain one.

Straight line speeds were the topic of conversation at Watkins Glen.  The organisers are keeping a watching brief on a couple of the cars, but are keen to see what happens at some of the handling focused circuits coming up before making any rash decisions.

A week of zero Si's!  Well its happened, with some amazing battles at both Watkins Glen and Road America, contact was non existent.

Xray Energy has been moved in to a Pro build for the next couple of rounds of the VW Beetle Cup.

Gossip

It's a Mini adventure!  Rumours are rife that a Mini series is on the horizon, for the original version of the car, and that the cars may make an appearance on the support bill of the Thunder Enduro before the season is out.  The TransAm cars are likely to be tested by Cerberus in the next week.

Maj is the talk of the paddock after his victory on Tuesday and his employment plans for next season.  Will he continue to run EmpireMSport, or move elsewhere?  One rumour had him in discussions with KRR Racing for season 5.

Only two Ferrari's for RML this week.  Rumours are that Mad has been banned from driving until his marriage ceremony has been done.  Gives his teammate a massive advantage in the Class A title battle if true.

The DART VW's flew at Watkins Glen, and all seems happy within the team.  Team manager Mikey Forrester confirmed to us that he expects Kidders, RangersRick and Major Raver to continue in the team on a Sunday next season, and that Raver and Kidders will stay in the team for the Thunder Enduro, with Wambogini continuing to drive a third car.  The team have confirmed that its three season deal with Alfa Romeo will likey not be extended as it has offers from elsewhere.

SWR boss Sophie is beleived to be close to agreeing a deal to remain with Subaru for next Season's Thunder Enduro, with JRush staying on board.  Rumours had Posh Rob leaving the team and going to RML next season, with Penfold joining Bradders at a brand new team on the grid.  Another intersting rumour had DSR driver Gizzard joining the series with the ex DMR Racing Renault Alpines and RGreenwood as one of the drivers.

Changes to the team points in the Thunder Enduro?  Well chief lobbyist RangersRick is confident that we will see a change next season and even an allowance on three car teams.

Thunder Enduro

Road America welcomed the teams for round 7, with a couple of surprises admissions on the entry.  Bradderstig was away on his hols, but WeeBilly who had been entered didn't show, leaving us with a grid of 20 cars.  The support race was for the Formula Fords.  Some had been hard testing, in fact CelticFox and Pronag had been smashing lap records with each lap and turned testing into who was the fastest in the world, so both had high hopes for the 6 lap race that lay ahead.

Their was some drama though, as all the cars bar one were without wings, but the Horizon team had found a loophole in the regs and were running the aero aids front and back, much to the rest of the grids unhappiness.  Fact was, they were legal.  Lights went to green from red and Badbeat made a great start to lead from Major Raver.  Raver was though by the 5th corner and by the end of the lap was shocked to be 4 seconds in front.  He had done one lap in the cars, to sort out his final drive, so wasn't expecting a good result.  On lap 2 he still led by the same amount, but this time Celtic was up to second, having moved through from 6th on the first lap.  Celtic started taking chunks out of the leader, and took the lead half way around the third lap.  By the end of the lap he had moved into the lead by 3 seconds.  Raver did well to keep the gap at that, but no one was denying the Quicksilver run car victory and Celtic proved his mega testing pace, with a superb victory.  Raver was comfortable in second, whilst Devil Lord took third, having fought through the field, he passing Pronag for the final podium spot as the wingless version proved quicker on the straight, Pronag unable to respond and finished 4th.

The Thunder Cars lined up, and this is always a difficult start to a race, the main straight is rather narrow and the first corner a worry on cold brakes.  Plato made a great start to lead Celtic and the fast starting Atomstew into the first corner, all making it through safely, as only Scarlet went wide.  Stew was now pestering the Lamborghini, but the two both went off leaving Plato in first, from Maj, JRush and Major Raver as they crossed the line for the first time.  One driver on the move was the Camaro of Kinky, who was up to second by the start of lap three and he now homed in on the Honda.  These two started a superb dice, the Camaro quicker on the straight, the Honda better on the brakes and corners, but behind them Maj was keeping a watching brief and Celtic was coming back into the picture in 4th as well.  Across the startline for the 6th time Kinky dived for the lead, but the two cars seemed locked together and both went off , having both out braked each other.  Maj, Celtic, JRush and Raver were all through before the pair had recovered.  They got back up to 4th by lap 11 and even pitted together.  Out-front and Maj had his mirrors full of the Countach, and these two were swapping positions for the lead, both also pitting together on lap 12 and re-joining with Maj in front.  For the next 11 laps the BMW had its mirrors full of the white Italian supercar, and defended perfectly, the two in a great clean dice.  Behind though Kinky was on the charge, he was as quick as the front two, but their battle was slowing them, although the Cerberus car to creep up, the three starting the last lap nearly nose to tail.  Celtic couldn't find a way past, Kinky hoped for a coming together, Maj said he would do anything to defend on the drag run out of the last corner, but he had enough, Celtic inched closer but the flag fell as all three cars were in a line together.  Plato recovered to 4th, only 7 seconds a drift, whilst JRush drove a superb race to bring the down on power Subaru home in 5th.

6th place turned in a battle of the AM's  Devilsboogeyman was inspired, and lapping as quickly as the those out front.  With 7 laps to go he was up to 6th, and closing in on 5th and 4th.  Sadly the fuel was low and he needed a slash and dash, leaving him in 11th at the end.  Badbeat was also moving through the field and bringing Scarlet with him.  He managed to grab the 6th place on lap 18 and held on in the closing laps as he tyres started to go and he had a couple of offs, whilst Scarlet ended up 8th, coming out on top of a great battle with Robraceruk and Posh Rob.

Posh Rob extended his lead in the overall championship by a further 8 point from RangersRick, who was happy with the damage limitation on a track that the lack of power was obviously going to hinder.

Teams & Drivers:

AV Motorsport: Xray Energy DNE

Did not enter.

BTC Honda Civic: AtomStew DNF

More electrical problems for the Honda, but the team are determined to not give up.  Made a good start and run second briefly on lap one, before going wide at the final corner.  Dropped down the order after that and was 12th when the electrics cried enough and left the car retired by the side of the road.  His luck must change soon.

Cerberus  Chevrolet Camaro 02:  Devil Lord – 15th,           Kinkycowboys 3rd

The team had the feeling that this was the race that got away from them.  Devil Lord made contact with the wall on lap one, which damaged the car, he then had other issues meaning three stops.  his pace was as quick as the winners, so 15th was very disappointing.  Kinky moved up from a low grid slot and was mighty on the straight, challenging for the lead by lap 5.  He fell back to 5th after a tangle with PMR Plato at turn one, but then closed the gap to the front two, finishing third on the rear spoilers of them both as the flag fell.

Cerberus R&D Mazda MX5: Bradderstig DNE

Did not enter.

DARE Alfa 4c: Wambogini 12th

Had a few mishaps early on that lost him time and left him near the rear of the field.  Showed some strong pace after this, the fastest lap time of the three Alfa's and enjoyed a late dice with RangersRick for 12th.  He will miss Spa, which is a shame as he holds the lap record there.

DART Alfa 4c: xKidders 17th,           Major Raver 7th

A terrible day for Kidders that may have finished his title hopes.  Struggled with straight-line speed, he was quick in the corners but couldn't pass on the straights.  Needed a second stop after going off at the fast kink on the back straight.  Raver was shocked with his result, he wasn't fast at all, but made very few mistake, as high as 4th early on, he led in the pitstops, 7th was a better result than the team had hoped for from him.

DMB34 BMW M2: Devilsboogeyman 11th

On the face of it, 11th after the luck the team had had this season, was a massive lift, but it could have been more.  Devils was inspired, on a high from his performances in the Beetle at Watkins Glen, he drove through the field and was chasing down 4th place when he needed a splash and dash late on.  New engine is coming from EmpireMSport for Spa, he could trouble the podium.

PMR Plato leads the cars into turn one.

20190507_225609.png

Major Raver and JRush both out drove their cars.

EmpireMSport BMW M3: Maj  1st,                            Empire DNE

The tail happy BMW, was still tail happy, but fast on the straight and Maj drove it with aplomb.  In the top 3 early on, he took the lead when Kinky and Plato came together and then spent the race holding off the Lamborghini of CelticFox, who was ready to pounce with any error.  To hold the lead for 20 laps under that pressure was superb, and he fully deserved his first Thunder Enduro victory.

Hooligan Racing Mazda RX7: RotaryRhys DNE

Hoppers Sport BMW M3: Hopperswwfc 18th

Possibly Hoppers best race of the season, closer to the pace of the pack, the BMW was a weapon in a straight line.

Horizon with Scruffs Chevrolet Camaro 16: Pronag 14th

A difficult race for the big Camaro, the car was reasonably quick in a straight line, it was stopping it that was the problem, as it went through its brakes quickly.  Also proved a difficult car to get through the kink on the back straight flat as well, a few brushes with the wall slowing him down.

KRR Racing Honda NSX 02: RangersRick 13th,           PMR Plato 4th

Plato was in the hunt for the win, leading at the start and dicing with Kinky in the opening 6 laps.  The two came to grief at the first corner, a racing incident, dropping them back to 5th, they battled until the stops, but then the Camaro moved away.  Finished 4th, only 7 seconds off the winner, it was certainly his best drive for a while.  Less power for Rick, meant he struggled with a car that handled well but lacked a bit of grunt.  He was just please to lose very little ground in the championship battle and should be more competitive at Spa

Monster JamSport Honda NSX 2005:  WeeBilly DNE

Did not enter.

Quicksilver Lamborghini Countach:  CelticFox 2nd

Fought for the lead on lap 1, he was shuffled back to 6th, but soon found himself back in the top 3 by lap 7.  Then spent the race trying to pass Maj, in a great dice for the lead.  Just missed out on the dash for the line, with winning his first Thunder Race.  Was in inspired form in the support race, driving to the front and dominating for victory, the two results left no one in doubt of him being DRIVER OF THE DAY.

RML Ferrari 355: Mad DNE,                           Robraceruk 9th

Was involved in a mega battle last season here with Major Raver, and this time had one late on with the SWR Subaru's.  Had a steady start, and was quick in clean air, he gradually moved into the top 10, but late on his chase of the Alfa was slowed with a fantastic dice with Scarlet, who beat him on the line.

RML Development Ferrari 355: Penfold 16th

A very disappointed Penfold, who felt he could of challenged for the top 10 and lost a bit of ground in the AM Championship.  Made an error on lap 2 that left him needing a second stop for repairs, he was very quick late on, winning Class A was at least some consolation.

SMEG Racing Honda NSX 02: Badbeat 6th

Had shown some pace in testing, but looked no where after three laps, as he was near the back.  Then drove a great race to carve his way through the field, taking 6th place with 7 laps to go.  his best ever result, he has become only the second AM driver to ever lose Pi, but that loss should not be enough to stop him repeating the feat before the season is out.  Massive result in the class battle with Penfold as well.

SWR Subaru BRZ: CQR Posh Rob 10th         JRush 5th

With Bradders away, Posh Rob made it clear it was about being sensible for him and playing the points gain.  He did this, stayed out of trouble and grabbed 10th place.  JRush drove superbly, lacked the straight line speed, but had the car well set up in the corners and made no mistakes, 5th was a great reward.  He has scored more points than anyone since his return to the series.

SWR with Prostate Cancer Subaru BRZ:  Scarlet Witch 8th

Nearly a repeat on Silverstone, as Scarlet got her braking wrong at the end of the first straight, managed this time to avoid any contact, and showed the Silverstone pace to good effect.  Moved in to the top 10, ten laps from home, she was catching 7th until a couple of errors and then a battle with Robraceruk, that entertained the crowd massively.  She is still in the AM hunt, and with the pace she is showing, she is capable of a big result before the season is over.

Team Hard Porsche Cayman: RGreenwood DNF

RGreenwood had high hopes, the Porsche expected to be fast here.  Sadly he retired on lap 3, engine issues meaning the car lost drive and he parked up with no hopes of repairs.

Touring Car Sunday - Rounds 5 & 6.

So after the weeks break, the teams returned to action at Watkins Glen.  The VW Beetle race was first off and what a race it was.  Kinkycowboys made a good start and led around the opening lap, but he was under massive pressure from behind, from Xray Energy, Devilsboogeyman and RangersRick.  Xray soon dropped back, struggling with the Elite build, but Devilsboogeyman was all over the back of the Cerberus run version, and on lap 3 took the lead on the back straight.  Kinky tried everything to get back in front, but try as he might Devilsboogeyman was driving a flawless race and kept the gap at one second for the remaining laps to take a very well deserved victory.  Kinky's challenge for the lead, was also a defend for second, as Rick had the tictac sponsored car all over the back of him and these two were in a great dice for the final podium positions.  Behind them Major Raver and Robraceruk moved through from the back of the grid for 4th and 5th, and these two will be at the back of the grid next time out as Rob continues to lead the Championship from his arch rival.  The Championship battle is oh so close.

The opening Touring Car race was the shorter sprint one.  The Subaru boys were down to two as Championship leader Bradderstig was missing, and we were also without any Honda's as well.  The DART VW team were keen to take advantage and Raver led the opening lap from Devilsboogeyman, Devil Lord and the charging Kidders.  DART had been heavily testing with all three drivers, and it showed, as Kidders was soon on his teammates tail and through into the lead on lap three.  Behind Raver though, Devil Lord was flying and was now challenging the top two.  Raver held the Subaru off for two laps, allowing Kidders to escape, that once Devil Lord was up to second, Kidders was three second away up front, and looked on for victory, well so it looked.  Starting the last lap, Kidders got the back end out on to the kerbs at the exit of the first corner and spun around.  By the time he got going he was down to 4th, and Devil Lord was in the lead.  But he wasn't safe as Raver was all over the back of him, and now had Xray behind in the Focus.  Raver had a look into the final corner but the Subaru had enough to cross the line just in front, the three cars passing the chequered flag as one, with a very annoyed with himself Kidders in 4th.

The feature race saw a reverse of the positions of the sprint and left Maj on pole, who had a very disappointing race one.  Also up near the front was RangersRick, who had the pace of his teammates in the third VW, but so close was the field and battles, he couldn't get to the front.  Maj led them away, but Rick was soon past the Evo and bringing the Focus of Posh Rob with him.  These two were in the top two positions by lap 3 and for the rest of the race they spent the race only separated by a couple of seconds.  Rick was marvelling in the testing work that had made the Golf handle like a dream, and although he couldn't relax, he knew the race was his for the taking.  He did so and with it, took the overall Championship lead.  Posh Rob was happy in second, whilst third was the superb Gizzzard.  The DSR run Hyundai had been getting better and better and was superb down the back straight.  Gizzard making it through to third by lap 8 and then moving away, lapping nearly as quick as the winner.  Devil Lord took 4th a great day for him, whilst the other two Golfs came home in 6th and 8th from the back.  The battle is now well and truly on between Cerberus Subaru and DART VW.

It was a superb day of racing, some of the battles and dices mid pack were of pure class, and expect the same as we head to Indianapolis next Sunday.
